Didn't Listen To Any Rap This Year

Post by Thun »

Other than Earl Sweatshirt's debut, I did not listen to an entire album of any hip hop artist released this year.

What should I listen to?

TRoy Ave and Nickelus f's latest tapes are the only new projects I've gotten any real replay value out of this year

My sense is you missed a pretty good year to miss, although I'm sure others will disagree. I've been pretty absent myself. Here are some things I enjoyed.

Kevin Gates - The Luca Brasi Story (probably my favorite project this year)
billy woods - I forget the name of it, but it's the one with blockhead
Ka - A Night's Gambit (I know you're not really a fan)
Prodigy & Alchemist - Albert Einstein (didn't have a ton of replay value, but decent)
Drake - Nothing Was The Same (not amazing, but I probably listened to it almost as much as I did any other rap album this year)
Jay-Z - Magna Carta, Holy Grail (wasn't very popular around here, but I liked it)

I'm depressed with myself for that list, but I think it's pretty accurate based on rap I actually listened to this year. I do like the new Roc Marciano mixtape and I just started to listen to his new album today and it seems like it'll be decent as well. And there are a couple other projects I've been meaning to spend some time with like Armand Hammer and a lot of random mixtapes I just haven't had time to give much attention to yet.

Do you mean rap or hip hop?

Everything that came out of east and west oakland this year should be right up your alley.

since you listened to (& presumably liked) Doris, then I think Wolf by Tyler should be right up your alley.

Childish Gambino, obviously.

Otherwise, Kitty Pryde didn't release her album yet, so you didn't really miss anything.

That Prodigy/Alchemist is probably my fav album of the year. I've had it in my deck in my car since it came out.

Why is no one talking about that Armand Hammer album with Billy Woods? I think it's really ill.

I really enjoyed Louis Logic's "Look on the Blight Side". Recommended for someone who hates modern hip hop, but loves hip hop and loves the art of music.

Lots of melodies, harmonies, interesting song sequences and arrangements, and no immature ignorant lyrical content. No pandering, no jeffin, no simpin. Just concepts, lyrics, vocals, thoughts, and truth.

All produced by Louis. Fuck with it.

Spark Master Tape grew on me a lot. I can't front, the shit is very creative and they're branding their shit right.

I brought this dude up before and it seems like he got some props. Check out Kal Duzay.

Based on what I remember of your responses to billy woods and Elucid last year (and/or 2011), their collaborative album Armand Hammer - Race Music will be your favorite release of the year.

I recall you not being a fan of KA, and his new album was not as good as the album you didn't like so leaving that aside:

Armand Hammer -Race Music
OME- Sir Rockabye
Quelle Chris- Niggas Is Men and/or Ghost at the Finish Line
Blockhead & Billy Woods- Dour Candy
