I turned 14 in 1988, easily one of the best years in Hiphop ever...

SO glad I was alive then.

It's actually worth fucking KNOWING, appreciating and having as much of this music as you can.

It's crazy how it CAN be argued that hip hop culture peaked with "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back".

The only higher I think we might have collectively reached, was with Wu-Tang in the 90's, or with Outkast in the 2000's.

Besides that? rap is some out of control :shittylikesometp: :bunk:

'88 will forever be remembered as the year Da Gawd A$AP Rocky was born. The real Rakim.

Ultramagnetic is the only one out of the bunch that's listenable.

PLEASE tell me that you're joking about that OutKast comment. Cuz if not... *shaking head*

OutKast had one really good album (their debut) and a good album (their 2nd album). After that, they went POP and only had good songs here & there. C'mon, son... we're talkin about Hiphop here!!

because when we're 13, 14 or 15 we just know what good taste is. i loved '88 but it wasn't until the 90s where i really listened to most of the music from that year or even knew how to appreciate it.

i listened to four horseman in its entirety before i did critical beatdown. i am almost positive i bought it first too.

you kinda forgot LL Cool J in that collage. and his nemesis Kool Moe Dee.
you're giving MC Shan too much credit, too. his singles weren't as big sellers as the rest of the rappers in that pic during the year of 1988.
i'm definitely sure that Kool Moe Dee was getting more spins.

No, he didn't. Neither released any albums in 1988.

What I don't get is, why make a thread celebrating 25 years since 1988 less than a week before 2014 starts?

FYI: I did NOT make that collage of album covers... I saw it on Twitter the night I made this thread and thought it would be cool to post. If I made it, I would not have used some of those albums as there were much better albums (in my opinion) then Audio Two, Kid-N-Play, Rob Base, Run-DMC and Salt-N-Pepa. Instead of those, I would have picked... JVC F.O.R.C.E. "Doin' Damage", Kool G Rap & DJ Polo "Road To The Riches", Lakim Shabazz "Pure Righteousness", Steady B "Let The Hustlers Play", and Tuff Crew "Danger Zone".

Damn, there was also Krown Rulers "Paper Chase" and Super Lover Cee & Casanova Rud "Girls I Got 'Em Locked" that came out in '88. The only one I didn't know about and didn't have on tape back then was the Krown Rulers album.

Threads like this are a timely reminder that attempts to discuss any rap released prior to Illmatic on the internet is bad idea*

wicked... I give people chances all the time. i'm still open to dialogue with thun. i'll talk to drizzle about things. anyone can drop a jewel.

but honestly.

YOU are fucking being serious? you are not calling Outkast hip hop? THEY sold out? The group that won 8 Grammys for the double album where each artist is completely fucking different from the other artist and there's like 20 genres of Black music and beats and singing and poetry and funk on those albums?

this is the fucking end of my trying with you. i give up on you having a mind open enough for the universe to inject some awareness into it
