the knowledgeable writers already separate themselves by the quality of their writing and their opinion/arguments, which should be fairly apparent to a knowledgeable reader. i'm not sure how else they should, or could for that matter, separate themselves. should we start issuing blogging permits approved by aging whiggers who view the golden age through a lense of myopic nostalgia and are just as far out of touch with actual urban youth culture as any fixie-riding Pitchfork intern from Iowa?

Yes, the writer is saying YGs album surely will inspire generations of black youths to start judo chopping semi trucks before committing arson and robbery, and not using hyperbole to describe the energy levels of the music.

This type of argument is so obnoxious from all fronts. "Rap music makes black people do bad things! Video games make kids violent! Porn leads to rape!" etc. If you think YG's album is as much a part of the problem as the disenfranchisement, lack of education, and the lack of black fathers (which isn't really the case anymore anyway), and not a product of those factors, there's not much of a conversation to be had.

drizzle's touching some of the points i started to post about & then deleted.
people are really unclear about who they're rallying against with this "hipster" label. they're using it as a catch all term for people (in this case writers) they feel at odds with. there's good writers who like chief keef & there's terrible writers who like money boss players.

there's nothing that could give, that's my point.

if you know your shit, you know who to read.

the 'lumping in' is being done by a guy who has an extremely limited and orthodox take on rap music and the discussion about it. his whole thesis is based on cliches and sweeping generalizations, most of which are either partially or fully false. why should good writers do anything to placate this idiot, or even acknowledge his existence in any way? or anybody like him. their job is to write, and they're doing it. they are separating themselves by the quality of their output and that quality is obvious to an attentive reader.

find people who's opinion and writing you respect, ignore the rest. accept that other people may have a different opinion than yours and let them have it. accept the fact that you can only lay claim to your own interpretation of something as big as a genre of music, and neither you nor a single other person alive speaks for the objective totality of it. as a reader, that's the only thing you can do.

Kinda veering off topic here, but w/e. Being born out of wedlock doesn't automatically disqualify a father from being a presence in their childs life. A CDC study from a few months ago indicates that black fathers are somewhat more involved in their childrens lives compared to white or latino fathers, regardless of whether they were living with the children or not:

It's not an obnoxious argument. It's a fact. You're probably so removed from that world that you're ignorant of it.

If you're really making the case that rap music is as responsible for criminal behavior as the aforementioned influences, I think you're a little too far down the Bill O'Reilly path of logic to bother reasoning with. I guess if you're that simple anyway, it's a lot easier to dismiss someone and cast assumptions on them than to put any thought into a response tho

This is why F.E.D.S. magazine has always been the best hip hop journalism. It is written and somehow published by actual black people who did not waste time going to school.

Rap music might not directly inspire a kid to go out and commit a specific crime, but you're living in a fantasy land if you think it doesn't have a profound detrimental effect on the attitudes, outlooks, and values of many inner-city kids.

for real.

it's about THE LEVEL OF INTEGRITY YOU BRING TO THIS SHIT.

Vanilla Ice wasn't a problem at first. A lot of people jammed to 'Ice Ice Baby'. It was when it was found out he was a fucking fraud that people were like :ohhh: :bunk:

White people are not the problem. FAKE WHITE PEOPLE ARE THE PROBLEM.

Fake black people are the problem too, but honestly, not as much of a problem. Because we're dealing with a Black artform.

Kinda hard to fake being black when you are black

but you can't fake being wack when you are wack

lotta these hipster motherfuckers ain't got no god damn integrity. so fuck their entire opinion on hip hop. stop writing about it, you fucking culture vulture.

I'm not saying that 'rap music'/rappers can't or don't have an effect on those things. I just think the idea that it's as equally responsible for problems in the black community is offensive. If you can point out the 'profound detriment' rap created for the black community that wasn't there before it existed, I'm all ears.

great post.

although, i'll have to say that in my own modest observations i've noticed that there is indeed a dearth of black faces, the higher you go up the hip-hop hierarchy. for example not one of the writers in hotnewhiphop is black, not one of the individuals overseeing rapgenius right now is black, this site is populated with pale faced tryhards & when you examine the labels it's again the same story. i don't know if this is a result of black writers being actually singled out and disenfranchised or if black people really don't care to write about their own culture. whatever the actual reason is, i find it really upsetting / alarming, and it's actually the primary reason why i started my blog (my writing skills notwithstanding).

I do not mind hipster writing about hip hop. Let the guy writes. Most writer black or white do not lives trap rappers lives anyways.
The world has changed. The 90's are gone. As far as black writers not having gigs, that says more about the failure of black people
to create business to benefit their own creation. It starts very early in most hoods where most business except barbershops and hair
salons are not owned by blacks. How many times rappers would boast "I've got a jewish lawyer" while lot of black lawyers are unemployed.
Black people as a collective are consumers not content creators and that is in many other industries that affect them.
