Angie Martinez resigns from Hot 97
The iconic DJ called it ‘one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make.’ Rumors were swirling she was jumping ship to Hot 97’s competitor, Power 105.

New York’s voice of hip hop is going off the air.

DJ Angie Martinez announced Wednesday she had resigned from Hot 97, ending her reign as one of the city’s most familiar voices on the radio.

“This was one of the toughest decisions I've ever had to make, but ultimately it is time to move on, to grow and to be challenged in new ways,” Martinez, 43, wrote on Instagram. “Saying goodbye is always emotional and bittersweet but I am extremely excited about the future.

“Today will be my last show.”

The radio station thanked Martinez for more than 20 years of service.

“She exemplified professionalism and passion for music,” the station said in a statement. “We thank her deeply for her commitment to hip hop, radio, and broadcasting.”

Rumors were already swirling on Twitter that Martinez was bound for Hot 97’s competitor, Power 105.

Nicknamed “The Voice of New York,” Martinez has for years hosted the Afternoon Drive, in which she often landed interviews with some of the biggest names in hip hop, entertainment and more. Jay Z, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian and Derek Jeter have all been guests on her show. President Obama even called in when he was on the campaign trail in 2008.

She may be one of the top five corniest human beings to ever breath but this news doesn't really effect me either way. Do people still listen to the radio? Not a snarky question. I legit don't know if they do or don't.

Commuters, mostly.

Looks like she's going to Power 105.

That's what strikes me most about all this Hot 97/Rosenberg/Ebro/TV show/Dame Dash/Combat Jack/Chuck D conversation that's happening. I can't believe its 2014 and people are interested in whats happening on terrestrial radio.

Fuck radio, the highlight of Angie's career was playing Calvin's gf in the "What's poppin', Kermie?" scene in Paid In Full.

Fuck all this, but ( :pause: ) yo, Block, you live in NYC and produce beats for a living, yet you don't listen to 89.9?! That shit's disheartening, dudebro.

Saturday 8AM-4PM is essential life shit.

When would I ever listen to the radio? On my transistor radio? Radio listening in NYC is pretty much for
1)people in cars
2)people at their desk jobs
3)people who work at clothing stores on broadway who blast hot 97 all day (but even that kinda thing is being taken over by pandora)
I do none of those things.
As for 89.9, I used to listen to it all the time...in 90's, when I owned boom box with a radio dial on it.

Funny, I constantly question why a guido from the suburbs of queens would ever question me about anything relating to what it's like to live in NYC.

Hey there. Just saying, there's some great stuff that you might enjoy listening to on Saturdays if the opportunity arises. WKCR streams over the internet and iTunes now too, so your phone can be your radio. OK bye, back to my desk job.

^I think I've reached that jaded old age where I prefer to have control of the music I listen to, rather than have someone else pick it for me. Even in it's heyday , i only listened to like 2 radio shows with any regularity and I was in full on rap nerd mode back then. Nowadays, I'd rather listen to a podcast.
