Let's talk great songs by non-so-great rappers

Post by Career Over Like Mike(NJJ) »

I don't just mean rappers who flat out suck, but also rappers who might be talented but struggled to translate those talents into songs and rappers who might have been fine in groups or as weed carrier guests, but then shit the bed when it came to recording their own solo shit.

Some examples with some personal faves of mine:

Jae Millz - Sober

Best Max B swaggerjack ever from the archetypal amazing battle rapper who previously couldn't record a good song to save his life.

Cali Swag District - Teach Me How To Dougie

God has already taken 2 members of Cali Swag District back to the essence because they couldn't anything else that was anywhere near as bumpin' as this classic.

The New Style - Scuffin' Those Knees

The only banger by the group formed by Treach, Vin Rock & DJ Kay Gee in 1988 before they changed their name to Naughty By Nature in 1990, but what a banger.

Whistle - (Nothin' Serious) Just Buggin'

Top 5 dance record of all time, a Hyphy record 20 years before Hyphy existed. Also had an influence on Jerk.

Kirko Bangz - What Yo Name Iz?

R.I.P Drake, you were bodied with your own style by a 17 year old Texan midget (no The Brow during his teen years.)

House Of Pain - Shamrocks & Shenanigans

Everlast is the lesser talented Tarrie B, and plastic paddy Irish Americans are some of the most embarrassing people on the planet, but a banger is a banger.

Tyga - Rack City

I really like Tyga as a weed carrier on Young Money posse tracks like Roger That, The Motto and Senile but, yeah, this is his only jam thus far.

L Fudge - Liquid

L Fudge recorded 1 great song with Liquid and 1 aiight song with Show Me Your Grattitude, which puts him way ahead of that fucking hack Mos Def in the Rawkus canon.

The Game - Put You On The Game & Hate It Or Love It (2nd one barely counts)

Lord Jamar & DJ Vlad - White People Are Guests In The House Of Hip Hop

Erick Sermon - React & Music

Reflection Eternal - 2000 Seasons & The Blast

smh @ Shamrocks & Shenanigans. I was recently reminded of What Ya Wanna Do and some of Ice-T's weed carriers werent exactly blinding you with science but they sounded like Posdnous once that Cyril O Reily cunt popped up.

Ill Al Skratch - Where My Homiez

Ahmad- Back In The Day

Nine - Whatchu Want

E-Rule - Listen Up

these might be more like one hit wonders. possibly not Ahmad & E-Rule, who were really good but never lived up to potential. Some of those Nine & Ill Al beats were way out of their leagues.

We're just going to be OK with somebody calling Eric Sermon "not so great?"

I revisited it recently and it doesn't really hold up that well. When it came out I rocked like 4 or 5 joints off it though. But one of them was "My mind is driftin'" which is so corny now , i'm embarrassed I ever liked it.

The beats hold up nicely in my opinion, the rapping does not

Pretty much. You could say that about most of that kind of rap from that era. People "styling" rarely ages well.

That's not the concept of the thread. The concept is rappers that are just ok and struggle to translate their talent into solo songs, but have an exception of one or 2 great songs in an otherwise sub par solo catalog.
