All time great. Him and Paten Locke put on a killer show, go see them if you get a chance.

For what it's worth, over the last ten (even fifteen) years, there's been a lot of those "what's a modern classic" / "what will hold up" type threads, and this album is one of the only ones from the middle of the decade I remember seeing frequently in multiple lists.
It's usually a lot of early two thousands stuff like The Cold Vein or Supreme Clientele, and / or whatever's recent enough to be fresh in people's minds. (Off the top, the other ones I really remember getting a lot of mentions from the mid two thousands are things like Madvillainy the year before and Donuts the year after.)

Hell Hath is universally regarded as a classic, isn't it?

Re: 10 years later: how do you feel about Edan - Beauty and
I think a big reason for that is because Beauty and the Beat doesn't sound like it was made in 2005. Rather, it's such a focused uniquely sounding record that it could have been recorded today or in the mid-90s as it sounds like it came out of a vacuum. It doesn't really fit within the progressing narrative of any 2000s underground scene/sound, and for that there's nothing about it that could wind up sounding dated.TheBigSleep wrote:For what it's worth, over the last ten (even fifteen) years, there's been a lot of those "what's a modern classic" / "what will hold up" type threads, and this album is one of the only ones from the middle of the decade I remember seeing frequently in multiple lists.

I'm not as big of a fan of the album as most as, even as a fan of Edan's rapping, I can't get into how the vocals sound on this album. I know it was a specific aesthetic choice and I'm not dismissing it as wack, it's just not for me. Respect the heck out of the project though and don't debate with anyone calling it classic.

Re: 10 years later: how do you feel about Edan - Beauty and
definitely a well put together album. it sounds like a cohesive project, as opposed to primitive plus which plays more like a portfolio.
I saw him with Grand Buffet and Sage Francis back in 2001. Great show. Hadn't seen him since.
i wanted to see Edan perform with Paten Locke when they were the opening act for DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist (props to them on adding them to their tour), but the tickets were $40 and I ended up catching Denzel Curry the same night for $10 instead. Plus, I think their opening set was probably under 30 minutes.
isn't he in some bands on the side also?

It is such an amazing album. Clever, unique, next level production, dope rhymes.
Damn near perfect in my opinion.

Still great. I saw him and Paten on the Renegades of Rhythm tour and they killed it for sure, although it was disappointing that he didn't do anything new. Wonder if we'll ever see another Edan album at this point.

Love this album. Im a big fan of his lyrics as well.
Re: 10 years later: how do you feel about Edan - Beauty and
There's that Echo Party thing, which is really a multigenre, multimedia mix. Not a followup by any means but also not to be slept on.
And yes, dude puts on arguably the best live hip-hop show of our generation.

I didn't get into until about 5 years after its release. I think it's a great album, but never clicked for me as a classic.

Thought it was disappointing, tbh, but I haven't listened to it in a very long time. I ought to revisit it and see if I still feel the same way about it.

I ain't say that shit. "Goddamn eternal" sounds evil. (Just fucking with you ... don't flip out.)Mindbender Futurama wrote:AWAE wrote:Versive wrote:It's s goddamn eternal masterpiece
Surprised nobody has said they like Primitive Plus better. Aside from billy woods telling me that during our interview, I seem to remember a lot of Phila posters (maybe mostly in TROY but still) saying the same in the past.

I'm in the primitive plus camp
Re: 10 years later: how do you feel about Edan - Beauty and
Still love it. But I hold Primitive Plus in a higher regard because of the personal touch it has.
I met him years ago when he used to live in Maryland and got cool with him through a mutual friend of mine.
I still have my copy of Beauty And The Beat and I break it out and listen to it.

how do I fell about it? heh. " yes, daddy".
Re: 10 years later: how do you feel about Edan - Beauty and
I'm in the primitive plus camp as well- simply based on it having more replay value and "fun" tracks in comparison to beauty and the beat. I think Beauty is probably a more complete and consistent album throughout but I think the high points on primitive plus are better, or at least have better replay, imo. both albums are damn near classic though
Re: 10 years later: how do you feel about Edan - Beauty and
It's a very good album. Original and trippy. I wouldn't say classic but then again there aren't many better albums from the 2000s. The vocals are kind of drowned out sometimes. Incredible energy when Mr. Lif comes in on Making Planets.
I didn't like Primitive Plus that much, although there is one banging track with a guitar loop.

One of my top 5 albums from 2000-2010, so yea, a personal classic. I still listen to this album probably 2 or 3 times a year which is way more than most albums from this era.
