R.I.P Killer Mike. You are now the new Immortal Technique.
Re: Rapper of the Year
I'm gonna go with Vince Staples. I feel like he's gonna get crazy buzz next year and he killed his appearances on albums. Open Mike Eagle and Freddie Gibbs were my next picks.

Re: Rapper of the Year
Vince and Gibbs were my favorites from the list but they year pretty much belonged to Thugga.

Re: Rapper of the Year
Thug had a great run and I voted for him, but this was still arguably Drizzy's year. Especially if we factor actual rap skills into this.

Re: Rapper of the Year
I am by no means a Drake fan, but wouldn't you say YT is just a more entertaining or likeable rapper than Drake? Surely, skill wise, Drake has to be better in your opin, no?

absolutely
- Surely, skill wise, Drake has to be better in your opin, no?
yes and no. Drake's rapping is a lifeless pastiche of other better rappers, which has him steady coasting at about a C+/B- level in terms of traditional 'he got bars yo' standards. He's technically proficient but horrifically boring to me and the persona he creates from those bars is profoundly douchy.... what's even the point of being proficient if you can't do anything good with it?
Thug on the other hand, in his best moments creates something unique and that alone makes him more interesting imo. Granted he fails as often as he succeeds, and he will probably never drop a single lyrical miracle. But at least he tries to do something new and different, and sometimes it does work very well.
To me, taking risks and having intermittent success at trying to do something more is better than coasting down a safe path to accomplish a safe objective. Drake is the safest popular rapper in history. Technical proficiency is something but it isn't everything.

Re: Rapper of the Year
Voted Thugga.
I dig Makonnen, but is dude even a rapper? He's like a cocaine-slinging, Autotune-crooner. Nothing wrong with that, it's basically ackbar's ideal human being, but his inclusion seems odd.

Re: Rapper of the Year
tenous but the dude did make a big splash this year in the context of specifically rap, not anyting r&b/singing related. in an age when all the rappers also want to be singers, a kinda-singer that is pretty close to a rapper is close enoughKid That's Lifeless wrote: I dig Makonnen, but is dude even a rapper?

Obviously Young Thug. Go back and read the thread and laugh at yourselves for hating.
Re: Rapper of the Year
I like Young Thug 'cause he raps like Walter White Jr.

Re: Rapper of the Year
He's def not my favorite rapper or even close to the best rapper on the list (obviously), it's hard to argue YT's year

Re: Rapper of the Year
How is Nacho gonna list a bunch of Young Thug's best tracks of the past year & change and then not mention YRN, Eww or Givenchy?

Re: Rapper of the Year
Went with Gibbs. He's not an incredible rapper, but he put out the best album in my opinion and I wasn't a big fan of anybody else on the list this year.

Same. When Gibbs really gets he right he can be great though. Dont care about most of the people on this list but want to check out more Vince Staples at some point. Liked a few YG joints but cant deal with him for more than 2-3 songs in a row.

LOL @ Young Thug outpacing OME; that's preposterous.
Voted OME (duh) as he is clearly the superior on the list: His album was stellar, live show improves and garners rave reviews, and his cameos and assorted appearances are smoother than wax on the buns of Belgium's sauciest female fitness centerfold.
Dude...Ras Kass...? Kendrick Lamar? Vince Staples?

ras kass has the same dirt on gloss as sean wiggs had on ghostface
what's your objection to Staples tho, both eps he put out this year were dope. combined judiciously they could actually make for one of the year's best albums

Re: Rapper of the Year
I couldn't disagree more regarding Staples; dude's formulaic, to say the least. Beyond that: voice, delivery, content etc.

Re: Rapper of the Year
Nah search Ras Kass on this forum and you'll definitely find me to be his toughest critic. He finally got good beats and doesn't rap on this album like he is trying to mack to some import car model. It isn't SOL, it isn't even Rasassination, but to hear Ras over good beats and at 60% of what he used to be is refreshing in a down album year.drizzle wrote:ras kass has the same dirt on gloss as sean wiggs had on ghostface
