"Other than Tribe's debut, they don't have any albums that I want to listen to front to back anymore."

"Low End Theory is just ... loungy and pretentious sounding now. You'd fully expect to hear some alt-dude bro philosophy major type douchebag playing it while slurping obscure coffee and pretending to read Nietzche while bemoaning his lack of basic bitch pussy.
Midnight Marauders is way too much fender rhodes happy sound, as Blockhead has pointed out. Most of the album sounds kind of silly and tepid at this point.
"

Releast shit Thun ever wrote.

Anyone else have similar change of opinions like this?

The sentiment, as it relates to those albums, I don't understand; nor can I sympathize with it when accounting for their pivotal roles in shaping what Hip Hop was/is to a lot of people.

I especially have a problem with the production on those Tribe albums.

Somewhere out there, there's someone who prefers Nastradamus to Illmatic, The Doggfather to Doggystyle and Kingdom Come to Reasonable Doubt

If you like the first Tribe LP the most thats fine but the others are still as good/creative/influential as the general consensus suggests. I find LET a bit samey but love Midnight Marauders and rarely play Peoples... (aside from Footprints)

Lol that's just silly

However, as I said in the Mobb Deep vs outkast thread, listening to phife verses in 2014 is painful.

not really comparable in any sense though are they? unless you agree with Thun's flakey theory that Q Tip wanted Tribe albums to sound like The Infamous

You might aswell put Things Fall Apart up against Carter III

When was he ever considered lyrically advanced? That's as a big of a Boner Statement as was the statement that knocked the production.

If you didn't notice Phife wasn't actually that great back in the day there's a good chance you'll feel the same way about Young Thug or whoever in 15 years from now.

Eh, I made the poll because they were two duos whose production was largely created by the same group of people, not because their music itself was similar. Same applies to Tribe, but with an extra MC.

I remember back when Low End was heavily favored over MM here a few years back. I've always preferred MM and when I'm in the right mood it still hold up, but I think a lot of my attachment might be credited to nostalgia.

Tribe's first three albums are all great. I don't have much desire to listen to them these days, though.

there's more variety on MM I think.

I was listening to Dre, Snoop, Cube etc more when LET dropped and it didn't really grab my attention.

I've always thought that , while it's obviously a very good album, MM is pretty overrated. It was the beginning of them using those Ummah sounding beats that consists of boring rhodes progressions that i never could get into. Then , on "beats rhymes and life" they went all in on that sound, which sucked , imo.
Also, I agree that listening to phife is hard in 2014. I thought it was hard in 92. The "He got better!" argument never worked for me cause, sure, he got better but he went from pretty bad to almost decent.
One of the things that's so dope about "People instinctive travels..." is that Phife isn't on it that much.

I've always noticed phife wasn't good, basically everyone did. It's that now he not only sounds untalented, but also insanely dated.

LET is my favorite Tribe album, but MM holds it own too. There's really nothing wrong with PITPR but I almost never listen to it these days.

The production on the Tribe albums has always been the selling point. If this is the foundation of your criticism then IMO your opinion is worthless and won't help engender a good discussion in here.

Phife was fun and served his purpose on those Tribe albums. Sometime its nice to mix it up, that's why I miss Malik B on The Roots albums. I mean, if we're all throwing this out there, Q-Tip wasn't exactly an amazing lyricist. His voice + charisma + wordplay was enjoyable. To me, the first 3 ATCQ albums are classics, no doubt about it.

Midnight Marauders and The Low End Theory are classic albums, great listens. Can't really see otherwise.

The Infamous and Hell on Earth - 10/10 albums. Murda Muzik- 7/10
