not even an hour, short for a double album that isn't a "double EP".

when did that "double EP" become a thing? did Necro invent that?

i first thought, "Wow! a debut album that's a double LP? that hasn't done before."
turns out Kurupt already did it.

I can't believe this has already leaked. I've been waiting for it for so long - I actually had it marked out on my calendar. So it's not even an hour long? Honestly, I'm glad to hear that because 1 hr+ projects get too tiresome.

Fantastic debut, for this day in age. Cohesive, realized, no filler.

But that "double album" tag is just an expression, right? Has anyone seen the physical media?

Album is not supposed to be out yet - it leaked. So to answer your question - NO.

Amazon saying 2CD but who knows

advantages of a double album:

-i think more royalty payouts, since when an album is made, the label only plays for 10 tracks even if your album has 15 on it.

i still don't understand how that works. hell, master p had lots of single disc albums with 20+ tracks on them, so does he never see any of the money from some of the songs? say if someone put an obscure album cut off ghetto d in a movie and it wasnt one of the 10 tracks the label paid for, does master p get royalties for that usage? i mean, surely a dmca claim will take the same song off youtube. or even mannie fresh's "mind of mannie fresh" album that had 31 tracks, and if you take out the skits, it is still over 15 actual songs.

-album sales are listed as two album sales.

that gives an inflated soundscan number, even though youre still only buying one physical jewel case with music in it.
you can't run up in best buy and bargain only the second cd into a upc scan. so i pretty much consider those sales numbers fraudulent.

also on the business side of this, how the hell did vince go from being an odd future guest feature to being on def jam without any major press? the first time people found out was in the doris liner notes. and nowadays i see "blacksmith" advertised as part of his label deal? you're telling me talib kweli is making money off this kid, too?

master p owned no limit records bro. he had a distribution deal
the 10 songs thing refers to the points or percentage a lot of major label artists get paid for sales royalties with a typical deal. it's not the same as publishing or licensing

He's been a favorite of mine since I first heard Shyne Coldchain. His no frills approach to songwriting is refreshing.

he has released a lot of mixtapes. sure, he wasn't hyped to stratospheric heights like the rest of the OF crew but aside from the OF superstars (Tyler, Earl, Frank) I'd say he's doing much better than the rest career wise.

Pretty decent release. When I first read that it was going to be a double-disc I thought that Vince might have overextended himself but since the total album length is just short of an hour, it works well.

blacksmith was named in those liner notes too... maybe he got picked up at the time when labels were trying to snatch up anybody who was young and getting a good response on the internet... seems like they took time with him though and actually did what a&r is supposed to do, instead of just rushing to capitalize on whatever sliver of internet buzz caught their attention at first

Blacksmith is Kweli's former partner whom Kweli is now beefing with (along with most people online lol, clown) but I think that dude manages Vince.

LOL ... this guy. Somebody get this troll outta here. saying hell cant wait was better is tantamount to claiming that less than half of summertime is of a lower quality. You can't identify at least 8 songs on the album that are decent?

sometimes i can't believe the stuff i read heere.

8 decent songs beats a great ep? Haven't heard the new album, but that was a terribly dumb argument on your side.

EP contained 7 songs. If you can identify at least 8 songs on the album that you like, then the album is automatically better than Hell Can Wait.

Still bumping this like crazy. FWIW first half of album > second half

Just noticed that sneaky little edit you made to my post. It's only on :phila: that Liquid Swords can be brought up in a Vince Staples thread. Let it go bro.

I've seen a few people who were driven to it by the hype be disappointed and rank it about 6.5ish initially, but it grew on them with replay. That makes sense imo, it does really have much that grabs you with immediacy unless you're already a fan of Vince to begin with. In that regard hellriser has a point re: Hell Can Wait, that was an ep where several songs were more obvious bangers that could've been strong leading singles from a full length album. The new album is more of a quiet storm thing, there's not much like Blue Suede or Hands Up on here. If you accept that it's more of a simmer than a boil then it lands nicely.

And the hype is overbearing as usual, it's not a perfect album and could use a few trims too. But I like a good 90% of it, which is very strong ratio in this day and age.

Yea Blue Suede is the only thing that's ever grabbed me.
