Re: Indie Hip-Hop Album of The Year
Haven't been a KA fan previously, but the Dr. Yen Lo album is everything I like about Roc Marciano, Madvillain and Max B in 1.
That it was produced by someone who previously worked with godamn Mos Def makes it all the more impressive.

It doesn't, but I see where he's coming from with the comparison. It's an insular album, existing in its own world.
Was happy to see Yen Lo leading 5-0 when I voted. This one should be a shoe-in.
Maybe now that everyone's on board with the Ka-Preservation combo, heads will go back and revisit 1200 B.C.

From the list Dr Yen Lo.
Gibbs is pretty good too but has a few duds and feels more like a zipfile of good songs then a cohesive album.
Junglepussy, The Outfit, Maxo Kream, Tree's Trap Genius. Denzel Curry could all get it otherwise, a few others i'm forgetting too

Re: Indie Hip-Hop Album of The Year
Haven't listened to any of these except maybe for Cherry Bomb, but I try to pretend like that album doesn't exist. I still have a lot of time before end of year though !

Yen Lo is the "right" answer, but damned if I didn't vote for the new shiny object in Cavanaugh. I wish it was longer, but I love the shit out of it.

Denzel Curry and The Outfit, TX are in the Tastemaker's Choice thread, the Maxo Kream is in the Mixtape of the Year thread.drizzle wrote:The Outfit, Maxo Kream, Denzel Curry...

I haven't given it a true full listen but from what I heard its equivalent to a double stack off a Wendy's value menu.Cleanhobo wrote:How's that Ras Kass album?

Re: Indie Hip-Hop Album of The Year
Days with Yen Lo is certainly a deserving album, and Today, I Wrote Nothing is actually pretty dope too.
Right now I'm really riding with Bad Neighbor so I had to go with that. I didn't know what to expect given that Blu has been a bit of a letdown and historically I'm not the biggest MED fan, but Madlib really came through on the beats again and I feel like both of MED & Blu did a great job of matching the vibe.

It's been nominated for AOTY which is arguably a greater accoladeEmployee wrote:How is Earl's album not on this list?

Re: Indie Hip-Hop Album of The Year
I still stand by Yen Lo as a runaway, but looking at
Supastition - Gold Standard 5% 5% [ 2 ]
PRhyme – PRhyme 5% 5% [ 2 ]
Oddisee - The Good Fight 8% 8% [ 3 ]
and to an extent
MED, Blu & Madlib – Bad Neighbor 5% 5% [ 2 ]
Apollo Brown – Grandeur 3% 3% [ 1 ]
The Alchemist & Oh No – Welcome to Los Santos 3% 3% [ 1 ]
makes me think that these could splitting the vote among more traditional fans who might've been turned off by Yen Lo's lack of drums. As much as that boggles the mind, I'd be interested to see which of these would rank highest if not all of them were included.
