Who was the MVP of HipHop each year from inception?

Post by Gyangsta 4 Life »

You can start in '79 (or whenever sugar hill gang came out) OR just as far back as you can have an honest opinion about.

Example:

1994: Biggie
1995: Tupac
1996: Nas
1997: Puff or maybe RZA?
1998: Jay-Z

etc.

To me, Aquemini shitted on anything either of those did in '98. Vol. 2 had hits but Aquemini changed the whole game. Plus Dre was extremely sharp on that album. To me, he was the best.

fair enough, and obviously Outkast >>DMX, but I took 'MVP' to mean someone who had the whole game locked down and was pretty much inescapable.
DMX was everywhere in '98 - mixtapes, features, selling a shit load. Headed up that 'changing of the guard' phase of the shift from the shiney suit era to dudes like Nore, Pun, Ruff Ryders, Sigel, Cam etc

Spoonie Gee for 1980 offa the strength of the Love Rap/New Rap Language single being a real game-changer:

the genesis of smooth Harlem rap/a more conversational flow which would be a big influence on Slick Rick and Rakim with Love Rap, and New Rap Language being the germ which spawned T La Rock/LL Cool J/Ultramagnetic MC's.

Suprisingly good list with some good shoutouts. Don't necessarily agree with some of the latter choices and the obvious East Coast bias is obvious, but overall a good list. Haven't gone through all writeups yet but up to the late '80s it's pretty on point.

Jay-z the Best Rapper of 2009? That's how terrible the late 2000s were for rap.

'09 might've been Renzel's year actually.
