The Battle of '91

I was going through my tape collection and realized just how crazy 1991 actually was. I know LET might be the easy pick, but it's not as easy as you think.

Oh hell no. That's not even Ice T's best album.

Impossible for me not to pick Low End, but it really depends on the day and my mood between most of these albums.

I was actually thinking the other day which year I liked more between 1990 and 91. Leaning towards 90..

I strongly disagree. A lot of it has to do with timing '91 was the perfect time for me to hear this and it stayed on repeat. I understand the that putting over DC is controversial to say the least but OG is def the best Ice-T album.

out of that list, cube and black sheep's albums i would still give a spin today. then again, i've never heard a cypress hill album in its entirety.

i never even heard of freestyle fellowship until maybe 2001 or so. did they ever get video play on mtv or bet in the 90s?

I understand that is the general consensus. OG just sounded more authentic. You gotta understand that I'm real stupid about this kinda shit especially as a kid. I'll judge some shit based on who would win in a street fight or whose done more time in jail. I mean if the musics are both good and all.

For a list of some of the other albums from '91, here's a thread from five years back in T.R.O.Y.:

De La Soul is Dead takes this pretty easy for me, NWA would be my #2

Poll would be 25+ options deep if I had to include everything. I figured minus a few bork votes here and there, these were the obvious choices and really, it still comes down to maybe 4-5 albums tops.

Breaking Atoms (probably top 5 all-time for me)
De La Soul is Dead (Millie, Roller Skating and Faith > top 3 songs from any album on the list)
A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing (beat-wise, might be the strongest and low-key most influential on the list)

Ice Cube's "Death Certificate" to me changed the landscape of lyrics matching good production overall when it came out; got it tied with Cypress Hill's 1st one because that was a big influence on me when I got into writing lyrics then. ATCQ with Low End Theory I got in second, because it was just about how the songs were put together at the time on a cohesive album. I didn't get into De La Soul Is Dead, A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing, Breaking Atoms, and To Whom It May Concern til later but dug them all when I heard them; two of them were hard to find (Freestyle Fellowship, Main Source) and two of them I just skipped over and waited til later to bump (De La Soul, Black Sheep). NWA's "Efil4zaggin" and DJ Quik's "Quik Is The Name" I heard and liked but didn't get into them too much for some reason other than timing; heard these a little later on as well.

real life ice cube may be small, but imaginary ice cube in his raps could beat up ice T.
