Yuck, neither. The "neo soul" movement of this era was just awful

1999 I was all about Operation Doomsday; 2001; the Slick Rick comeback album; half of Soundbombing 2; singles by Ghostface, Black Rob, Screwball etc; getting into Southern stuff like Young Bleed and Juvenile.

That's The Roots album with 'Adrenaline' on it which is dope so probably that.
I was never that into the Mos Def album but Hip Hop, Mathematics and Ms Fat Booty were decent at the time.

Around that era I was listeninh to a bit of everything - Jay Z, DMX, Ruff Ryders, Juvenile, Mobb Deep, Dre & Eminem, Outkast but also indie/underground stuff like Dilated, P Monch, Pace Won. There was alot of good things coming out on all sides

TFA opened with that ill Mo' Betta Blues sample, and wasn't Peedi Crack on that album?

I remember playing TFA much more than BOBS, both albums were experimental with fusing live Neo-Soul elements in Hip Hop but I remember feeling like the Mos Def album went too far and lost me with some of the songs. The only songs I remember from BOBS are Mathematics, Ms Fat Booty, Umi Says and the song Diamond D produced with the David Axelrod sample. TFA has much more depth to me and showed a new generation how to do the Neo-Soul Hip Hop fusion proper, favorite song: Love Of My Life.

Black On Both Sides had a lot of filler. TFA did not, plus it aged well.

TFA for me, last Roots thing I really liked aside from the live album. Never got into BOBS

I never really liked Mos as a rapper tbh and those Sean J Period beats always sounded a bit flat. I bought Universal Magnetic when it came out because everyone seemed to love it but looking back he was ridiculously overhyped, mostly by people presumably looking for an alternative to all the jiggy stuff that was dominating around that time. A bit like J Cole or Kendrick now in some respects.

TFA might could be the better album but i find myself listening to BOBS more these days for the high points. 'Hip Hop," "Brooklyn" and "Mathematics" >>>

Both albums lame, but "Ain't Sayin' Nothin' New" is one of my fav rap songs. That's a fact.

this exactly....things fall apart might be more consistently good but at the end of the day its merely just good where as BOBS has a bunch of great tracks that kill anything on things fall apart and because of that it has much higher replay value for me

also dont sleep on 'speed law' an incredibly underrated song and an all time great battle rap track...imo its the second best song on the record behind hip-hop

Always thought things fall apart was way overrated. Especially as a follow up to the roots best album, illadelph halflife. I've prolly gone back to listen to tfa less than half a dozen times since '99

when they came out I listened to things fall apart way more from front to back. skipped a ton of black on both sides even though it has some really dope shit.

Annual reminder that Umi Says is the worst song on any rap album ever.

Nas has done several tracks worse than Who Killed It. I'm sure it's been discussed on here before but that's a track who can't really take too seriously. It's more of an extended skit.

Nas definitely has the strongest worst to best ratio than any rapper I know.

Call it what you want, but I've never been so appalled at anything in music than Who Killed it.

Nas is the Simpsons of rap, a short god-level streak in the early-mid 90s followed by decades of mixed results and questionable choices

Black Girl Lost pt 2
Hero (and most of Untitled)
Rule
Nastradamus (the title track)
You Owe Me
Nas' Angels
That one on God's Son with the reversed beat (Zonin ?)

I'm sure there's more. I never heard Distant Relatives but I bet he does a Jamaican accent on there at some point.
