How Many Mics- Life After Death

We talked about this a little bit back in March on the 20th anniversary of his passing. But we didn't really get into it that much.

I remember being really torn when this album came out, but over the last 20 years, it has become one of my favorite albums of all time and is, imo, a fuckin masterpiece. Easily the GOAT double album.

So many different styles and flows and he really just killed it on every song. Only song I hate (did then, do now) is Hypnotized. Even Mo Money, which everyone is sick of and I hated then, is still an amazing song if you are being objective. What he did on that joint with Bone was uncharted territory for a NY MC and he absolutely killed it. Niggas Bleed and I Got a Story to tell are among the best story joints in History. Ten Crack, Kick In The Door, What's Beef?, Sky's The Limit, Missing You, World Is Filled, I Love The Dough. Amazing shit.

Then the last 3 songs - My Downfall, Long Kiss, You're Nobody... Fuckin bomb after bomb to close out the album.

Took me some time, some songs longer than others, but over the last 20 years this shit has been cemented in my mind as 5 mics. A double album that is 5 mics is even more impressive.

Liked it less over the years to be honest. Still a 4/5 for me, but think Forever is clearly better from a double disc stand point. Probably my fourth favorite album of 97.

3.5 - the high points are high but its just too long. Not really looking to hear Hypnotize ever again either - it's Jump Around / OPP status at this point

Since I doubt anyone else will, I want to mention "Playa Hater". that's some great subtle comedy that is even great background music to the uninitiated.

It's aged well, but I always thought, and still do think that it was a letdown as far as being a follow up to ready to die

I love this album, this and wu forever are neck and neck as far as best double albums. I'd give it a solid 4.5. Agreed with the last 3 tracks being the perfect way to end the album, too. Long Kiss Goodnight is the nastiest diss ever, gotta mention that.

Actually agree with that. The fact he freestyled that on that LA radio station the weekend he got killed kinda adds to it also.

If this was consolidated into 1 album with say 15-16 tracks, it would be a top 15 album of all time.

I don't because of the filler. Plus Easy Mo Bee was king on R2D, but if you trimmed LAD its in discussion at least.

if you take the best (or at least most important) 10 tracks off each then it's pretty even imo,

Juicy
Big Poppa
Unbelievable
The What
Warning
Ready To Die
Everyday Struggle
Gimme The Loot
One More Chance
Machine Gun Funk

vs

Hypnotize
Mo Money Mo Problems
Kick In The Door
Skys The Limit
10 Crack Commandments
Long Kiss Goodnight
I Got A Story To Tell
I Love The Dough
Going Back To Cali
Somebody Gotta Die

RTD for nostalgic purposes for me, but overall I think I might actually like LAD era Biggie better.

Also, LAD is much better than Forever and it's kinda not even close.

Good call but Gimmie The Loot + Machine Gun Funk combo is unfuckwitable.

If we're changing shit around, then we def need to include One More Chance remix on Ready To Die.

I'm a user and a gun fanatic, but that being said, I will still give this album a 4.5

if anyone invited you to parties, you'd eventually get sick of these joints.

If you were able to read the whole thread maybe that would be the first step in reducing the number of shitty posts you make.

Yeah, Juicy is an amazing record. Hypnotized is not.

The Juicy beat is plodding and clunky. Never enjoyed it.

Hypnotize is essential.

I think LAD is a 4-mic album. I agree with Step One....it's almost impossible for an album this long to be 5 mics.

To me, the wack tracks were:

Fuck You Tonight
I Love The Dough (mainly because of the hook & beat....only room for 1 commercial disco-type joint which is Mo Money Mo Problems)
Another
Playa Hater (despite the comedy involved, I still can't bare to listen to this track)
Nasty Boy

Considering there were about 12 songs per disc. that's almost half of 1 CD. If those tracks were removed, it'd be 4.5 mics to me.....dope, but still not as good as Ready To Die IMO (which I'd rate 5 mics). The rawness isn't there on this album like it was on RTD, which I blame on Puffy. All things considered though, still one of the best hip hop double albums of all-time

Worthy of comparison, but LAD has too many throwaways IMO
