Myjah wants to know about hip-hop thread

Post by Myjah »

Hi yall! Myjah here. I don't nearly have enough time to explore hip-hop music these days as I did in the past, so can you help me? Thanks!

Here are the parameters (and I'm going to make them small an easy): Ten best rep albums in the past decade. GO.

last 10 years

Currensy & Alchemist - The Covert Coup
Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Pinata
Kano - Made In The Manor
Fiend - Tennis Shoes & Tuxedoes
Q Tip - Rennaissance
Black Milk - Tronic
AZ - Undeniable

Everything else has been mostly terrible, embarrassing, forgettable or just unecessary. I'm sure people will start telling you about the ATCQ album, Rick Ross, Roc Marciano, Westside Benny, What$app Rickky, Lil Creamfloat and Drake though.

I assume everyone stopped listening to '444' after 10 days ?

Any thread where someone refers to themselves in 3rd person in the title should be locked on general principle, imho :gyeah: :gyeah:

But, anyhoo, here's 3 2017 singles of the eccentric backpack variety which I enjoy:

Quelle Chris - Buddies

Open Mike Eagle - Brick Body Complex

Count Bass D ft. Snoop - Too Much Pressure

A quick skim through my brain and Spotify list:

AWAR's albums have been outstanding
K-Def's instrumental projects
Jake One's White Van Music bangs hard
Pharoahe Monch's W.A.R.
Scarface's M.A.D.E.
Pete Rock & Deda's instrumental version to The Original Baby Pa
Lewis Parker's MK Ultra
The Four Owls' Natural Order
Timeless Truth albums
Sean Price's Imperius Rex

We have definitely been over saturated in the past decade due to social media. As a result it takes more effort to break down Hip Hop releases into what you personally feel is the best out of it all.

I take it you mean 'more new rap music' ? I find most of it pretty boring these days tbh. Not heard anything this year that has made me want to hear it more than once. Same old shit and nobody really bringing anything new to the table.

Have you heard mach hommy, schoolboy Q, billy woods, wiki, vince staples, your old droog, Elucid, quelle chris, ugly frank, gunplay, sauce walka, tree, Vic spencer, KA, Conway? I mean judging from your list, you and I definitely don't have similar tastes (gibbs and currensy are the only two I really have any interest in and I don't really see those dude bringing anything "new" to the table, even if they do make good music) but there's plenty of good new music out there. and even some of the dudes you listed and wrote off make some really good music. Perhaps you're just growing out of/losing interest in rap music in general? I mean, we are old. it wouldn't be that weird to feel a natural disconnect at this point in your life.

pretty funny... literally came in here to say this... AZ's last great lp was the format... I thought I might be confusing the two... undeniable was undeniably trash... i'd imagine marcberg has a place on one of these lists however...

tronic was the shit however... good recall

^AWOL and the format are classics. serious late career renaissance. does anyone have that "runaway slave" tape he did around 09? lost it & haven't been able to find since it dropped......

bump animal from pieces of a man like once a month... one of those few artists that dropped a super classic... and then somehow seemed to get better with consistent output... undeniable is the worst example of this... just took the samples and weird beats too far for me... some smooth moments but all in all a jay shoulder shrug lp...

I remember liking Caltroit, it was to me an example of how Black Milk made a strong breakthrough around this time by carrying the Dilla torch. I listen to some of Black's beat tapes from around this time too.

For some innovative and quality Hip Hop post '08 I recommend the work of Dre's right-hand man DJ Khalil https://selfscientific.bandcamp.com/alb ... hearted-ep" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Don't think I've listened to any albums as much as the Dr. Yen Lo and Roc Marci's Reloaded compared to other releases this decade.
