Best Group MC with No Solo Album

Post by Versive »

Make this a poll if you like but it occurred to me yesterday that several favorite MCs do not have solo albums but do have a fairly substantial body of work behind them.

I'm thinking specifically of MCs from groups:

Black Thought
Breeze Brewin
Posdnuos

I'm sure there are others too. Discuss.

The only correct answer is Black Thought.

Assume you're excluding Andre because of Speakerboxx/Love?

What ever happened to black thoughts solo album? Wasn't there even a single that dropped but no album?
I'll add psycho les and Boots riley (I figure if black thought is eligible, he is too).

yes. what you're looking for is Wish Bone, as far as no solo albums go. Not sure about best MC. I still have a hard time telling them apart.

I'd add Killa Sin to those already mentioned.

Feels like Inspectah Deck should be included in this but then you remember...

Treach is a good shout imo. With the right producers he could've done something great in the early 00s after NBN had faded. Always had a good balance between decent raps and actual songwriting.

Hardware was the official single. I believe DJ Krush produced it. MCA was going to put it out the album too and then came the turmoil for a few years with the label vs group. Not long after they ended up on Def Jam.

And it never leaked? I swear I remember a video of some sort. Did my brain just make that up?

To my knowledge the album was never completed. The only thing they put out was Hardware. Pussy Galore was suppose to be on the solo but it was later packaged on the Phrenology album.

Wasn't "Stay True" with Malik B also a leak off that Black Thought album?

Meant to include Andre but forgot.

Killa Sin is a solid mention also.

Breeze Brewin over all them. Juggaknots catalog + Prince Among Thieves > Roots catalog. Andre is close but take away Big Boi and who knows?

I believe “thought at work” was intended for the solo too

This is obviously all opinion. But I stand by it. Thought and Andre are amazing MCs but I'd rather hear new or old Breeze 100% of the time.

I would rather listen to an actual breeze than a solo album from either Black Thought or Andre.

Revised list:

Black Thought
Andre 3K
Boots Riley
Ishmael Butler
Breeze Brewin
Posdnuos
Trugoy
Treach
Killa Sin
Cougnut
Starang Wonduh
Offset

I actually considered putting one of the Migos kids in there, but I didn't know any of their names so I didn't but there you go. Added Trugoy because why not. Not at all familiar with Cougnut but if you say so.

Tough to add Boots Riley and not add Ish. Inclusion of the first 4-5 names on this list is debatable because you can make the argument that they all have solo albums in that they're the primary vocalist on at least one album each.

A Treach solo album,if done properly, would've been considerably more entertaining than an hour of Black Thought rapping for what seems like 9 hours without saying anything memorable.

Block I think you may be thinking of the video that dice raw had for a song that had black thought and malik b for dice raw's solo album. that dropped around the same time as hardware. there was also rumors of "dangerous thoughts" where dangermouse was going to produce an ep or full album for thought but that also never came to fruition.

IDK about all that, but worth adding to the list/poll if it ever materializes as such.
