Agreed on Ag's purple city run. However, WSG has sparked a significant movement with Griselda that has also now splintered to everything Mach Hommy/Fahim are doing. It's easy to hate on WSG and side with Ag on some reactionary shit, but if we're being honest WSG has moved better and made a bigger impact than Ag ever did in his career.

You could say that, but if you haven't been paying attention to Mach Hommy then you need to start ASAP.

I like grimy NY (or NY-inspired) dudes rapping about coke as much as anybody but their scene is treading water at the moment.

Mach is the only true standout who managed to really establish himself as a distinct voice with something more to offer than Roc Marci karaoke or generic coke bars.

WSG has some moments, but he's not very good overall, never has been imo. Conway is better (him and WSG actually do make a strong pair), but he's dropped a couple of boring tapes in a row and seems to be loosing momentum. Benny is the best rapper of the bunch, but he could end up like Conway if he doesn't come up with something else as good as Butcher On Steroids.

The rest of the Upstate/LI/'sounds like nu-mafioso NY' scene that bubbled up in the last few years has an occasional interesting tape or promising artist, but most of them do increasingly generic retreads of the sound that Griselda got signed for.

Fahim is a standout to me, Lil Eto is a standout to me. Dunbar has some good stuff. Crimeapple is getting some traction but I'm not a fan myself. etc etc.... FWIW I don't think any of these guys, aside from Mach, have a better overall discography than Willie The Kid, who isn't even that great himself and predates all this by a few years.

The whole thing reminds me of cloud rap, where there was a low barrier for access and a sound that seemed easy to imitate, so it got flooded and diluted very quickly.

Crimeapple's name is terrible; it might be one of the worst in the history of rap. Up there with Admiral Crumple even. His music appealed to me and still does, but he seems a bit too soft. I was the first blogger in the world to tweet out Fahim's diss track and then he blocked me on Twitter; perhaps I am subconsciously bitter. His writing is top flight and he is very good at what he does ( ), but my Rap Boner does not fully engorge upon his lyricism brushing its shaft. He's not a Marciano offshoot though; more of a flagrant hybrid of Ghostface, Vinnie Paz, and Action Bronson.

Fahim's output is a negative to me; calm the eff down with nineteen releases a week. He's limited in the same way Crimeapple is, but at least Crimeapple's writing suffices for his weak points. Fahim, not so much; he is a poor man's Westside Gunn (which isn't saying much). He's entirely derivative and makes no efforts to change that.

Westside Gunn is dreadfully bad; Subpar Blientele. He should only be acknowledged for furthering Mach Hommy's career.
