Hip Hop Karaoke
December 6th, 2004
Rothko - 116 Suffolk Street (Corner of Rivington), Lower East Side, NYC
8pm - Signup, 9pm - Show
NO cover charge, NO charge for signup
Featuring Instrumentals By: A Tribe Called Quest, Notorious B.I.G., De La Soul, Nas, Pharcyde, Naughty By Nature, Jay-Z, Black Star, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Wu-tang, LL Cool J, KRS-One, Biz Markie, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, The Beatnuts, Fugees, Eminem, Raekwon, Geto Boys, Fugees, Souls of Mischief, OC, Smif n Wessun, Das EFX, EPMD, and much much more...
this will be a lot of fun... it's for all of the heads that rhyme the classics in the shower, but never get a chance to rock them in front of a crowd. ala typical karaoke... but with beats and rhymes. we're aiming to be underground enough to let you rock "bucktown", but still corny enough to allow you to howl out "just a friend". lyrics are provided for those in need...
did i mention an open bar too? cuz what's karaoke without the booze?

thanks for the comments... i'll do my best to answer...third earth wrote:genius idea.
three questions
1. how late does it run?
2. are you gonna do more?
3. are the songs gonna be edited for radio, or are there gonna be a lot of white kids saying nigger repeatedly?
1. 8-11pm (but this is the first one, so i'm not sure how it will change in the future)
2. we'll have a selection of about 100 songs at first (again, the list will only grow and grow). those artists mentioned are only used as an example of the "vibe" that we're trying for. not complete cheeseball shit, but not too obscure either. * i do have the stone planet 12", but the rule is no artists doing their own songs, so pick something else. oh, i just realized you may be asking if we are going to actually be having more of these events, not number of songs... yes this will be a monthly event. (first monday of every month)
3. excellent question. my partners and i have been discussing this in depth. we don't want to ruin the essence of a song entirely, but i also don't want a bunch of honky's dropping the n bomb left & right. the solution that we've come up with is to edit the lyric sheets accordingly, while also trying to keep songs that use n***a a hundred times off the list. it's obviously a sensitive subject with everyone involved. since you mentioned it, i'd actually like to get your opinion on how it should handled.
bottomline is, i'm just looking for this to be a FUN event for all in attendance, keeping drama to an absolute minimum.

word. i'm definitely gonna try and make it down.
as much fun as it is getting trashed and singing guns n roses songs, this outta be fun too.
i don't really know what to say about the n word.
it could be a complete buzz kill, but keeping it out could make it wack. i remember the first time i heard jigga my nigga out at a club and the room was filled with bridge and tunnel guys and gals screaming it out, and i almost vomitted.
it's a tough call. i really don't know how to answer it right. i have a feeling it'll be uncomfortable.

congrats though. sounds like a pretty good idea. i wouldn't mind one around here except i can only imagine the crowd it would attract...
'what do you mean you don't have that new, re-released remake remix of tupac's 11th bootlegg album????? FUCK THAT!!!!!!'
turnout last month was about 150...oracle21 wrote:how was the turn out for the first one and how were the contestants
they weren't really contestants per se... as there was no contest...
but overall they were okay. as expected, some kids got up there and knew their songs and did a pretty decent job... and then there were people who needed some of wex's help to keep it flowing...
but overall, everybody was entertaining in their own way... and more importantly, everyone was laughing and having a good time.
