Hip Hop Bands?

Post by BigCat8 »

Obviously, we've got the most notorious one in The Roots, but what other hip hop bands are worth listening to?

Thoughts on...
-Stetsasonic?
-Heiruspecs?
-Any others?

Anyone else familiar with The Blend (Minneapolis-based)? Thoughts on them?

Hiphop bands were kind of like horrorcore. They were a not horrible (yet still somewhat misguided) idea that would have caught on by the mid to late 90s if there was anything there. More so than anything, the death knell of anybody giving a wild fuck about hiphop bands was brought upon by three plagues: horrible rapping, sloppy instrumentation, and unshowered white people.

 To Popeye's post.

Funnily enough I just did a show with some cats last weekend..I wouldn't consider us a band however.
I rocked my turntables, MPC60, and MPC2000xl, plus mic duties on two songs.
We have a guitarist, and an emcee besides myself.
The guitarist also sings(quite well).
And our emcee is(IMO) pretty dope.

I'd say it's more towards a portisheadish / gnarls sound than a "hiphop band".

Meh.

your name sounds like an indy rock band's name. evangelical indy rock band's name maybe, but an indy rock band's name. That's it.

My buddy did a show with the blend a few months back. I had to leave a few minutes into their set. not because I had to do something else, but because I couldn't stand any more of their douchebaggery.

Austin is that kind of city, you can find out about anybody,
just by asking around.
The whole world's getting smaller for that matter.

damn- now I wish I wouldve came up with a snazzy handle like popeyejones.

i believe the former Replacements bassist (or guitarist?) was in there, which is kinda weird.
When people think of Providence, Rhode Island they typically think of organized crime

Really? I've heard a lot of good things about their live show. They've also been cool with me in all kinds of dealings, and I dig the stuff I've heard from them. Still, I haven't seen them live, so I don't know if the live show sends douche chills or not.

Oh... Nouveau Riche. Nice little free EP a while back. Nikki Jean, Dice Raw... can't really go wrong there.

Check out The Flobots. It might just be the white man in me trying to break free but I really dig 'em. Kinda RATMish but more rapping and interesting flows.

I'm check out them other bands I haven't heard of. Flobots got some wack flows, weak deliveries, and corny cadences. The only thing they got is interesting lyrics. Even their messages are kinda trite.
