Has anyone been there?

I'm trying to plan a trip July 24-27, 2009 because Rickey will be inducted, probably the only one.

I went in 1992, but it wasn't for an induction ceremony.

Did you fly into Albany and drive? I've only been to the city when visiting NY. I don't even know why they include the rest as NY. It should be :ohcanada:.

Sorry Blastmaster and Glus.

I always wanted to go to Cooperstown, but it was always a real long drive. I am loving all the early 90's pirates that are eligible this year.

How does one get there if they plan on flying and then renting a car? Did anyone stay at nearby hotels?

I went with my family and we were staying with relatives on Long Island, so we took the long ass drive and made it a day trip.

it's an hour and a half from albany. it's probably not that far from saratoga springs either, then. you could probably stay in a bed and breakfast there, saratoga springs is beautiful and has a decent nightlife for upstate new york. i can't remember when the big horse races are there, though.

Basically. Maybe a little over an hour...Going to take I-90 W and then I believe you get off and take 20W as it's off the thruway a ways...haven't been in a couple years so my memory is a bit fuzzy.

Outside the hall, there's some pretty decent golfing supposedly (I have never there but my uncle used to)...Glass lake or whatever is right there, pretty cool spot. Not sure if they play any games at Doubleday Park when the inductees are going in (never been there for that but I know a few who have if I talk to them I'll ask)...Some little shops and such, couple local breweries, Three Philosophers...a lot of people like that brew, not my thing but a lot do. I remember parking being really tight.

Places to stay - place is known for their bed & breakfasts if you're into that. I'm sure you could google a bunch of those. Not sure on hotels, I live close enough where it's just a day trip.

Could always cruise the canal too, I believe they have cruises where you go through a couple locks or whatever..never did it though..

If you're into gambling or horse racing, Albany is about a half hour from Saratoga..absolutely beautiful track there, that will probably be opening weekend there which means there will be tons of shit going on. Bring a cooler or beer just make sure you bring cans...also have a video casino there. Kind of the opposite direction of Cooperstown, but well worth the trip in my eyes because I wouldn't really want to spend more than a day at Cooperstown...but that's your call.

beat me to it - but yeah, that should be opening weekend. saratoga used to be only open in august, but a couple years back they changed it to last week of july too...just opened wednesday this year...opening weekend they do something i forget what it's called. matching in the streets or some shit. i was there last year but i took a beating and ended up just driving home drunk.

travers stakes is the big race there but isn't until near the end of august every year.

in that case, gloss, go to saratoga too. all i remember is the place being packed and everyone wasted. all the girlies put on their tightest, nicest clothing (you can tell they're trying) and get sloppy drunk. good times all around.

Fuck all the Cooperstown hate Gloss. I've been there at least 4 times cause some of my family lives in upstate NY.

It's a beautiful small town and is next to a lake (Cooperstown lake) that is emerald green because of the limestone at the bottom. It's a gorgeous place. The town used to be a vacation spot for rich people back in the day before the Hall of Fame was a big deal. For hats and memorabilia hit up Mickey's Place. They've even got a good collection of minor league hats and every teams hat from back until the early 20th century.

You can stay at a nice hotel by the lake and rent a boat after you're done looking at all the baseball shit. It's not "hicky" at all. And if you're going with your bro-in-law you can go just hang out at one of the bars they have on the main strip at night. They've got a lot of good places to eat on the water as well. I'll come back in the thread and tell you when I find out exactly what the one place I ate at was called. It's this nice yacht club on the lake.

I agree that it's not that fun past 2 days, but if you're only going for a couple of days it's cool. Then again, I like to relax on vacation a lot more then :rockout: :gooden: since I've gotten older. Chilling on a boat on a nice lake with a few beers and fishing > clubbing for me.

you're gonna love it man. upstate and central NY is pretty brutal, but its nice in the country and it is actually pretty beautiful during the summer. i was just up in ithaca for four days and it was really nice up there. i would rent a car. you could even drive to turningstone casino and do some gambling if that's your thing. i agree that saratoga would be the swankiest place to stay up there, but its not cheap to stay there.

i've never been for an induction ceremony. i hear they are just amazing, with every living HOFer in town and milling about. you may get the chance to meet any number of your heroes.

i'm hoping this is the year for jim ed rice.
