The hot topic in Bill Belichick's afternoon news conference was defense, with chatter on 3-4 and 4-3 alignments.
Belichick took issue when a questioner asked him what endears him so much to the 3-4 defense, pointing out that his Browns teams played a 4-3, and that he's been with teams that won two Super Bowls playing the 4-3.
The alignments have been an early storyline in camp, with the Patriots playing more of a traditional four-man line instead of the 3-4.
"Honestly, most people thought we played a 4-3 at the Giants. Lawrence Taylor did a lot more rushing than he did pass-dropping; probably 80-90 percent of the time he was the rusher in the defense," Belichick said.
"It wasn't always a pass, but certainly in passing situations and a lot of pass plays, he was the designated fourth rusher, which really put us in what amounts to a 4-3.
"Honestly, I think that's something that is a media fabrication. There are a lot of different alignments out there. You see 4-3 teams use odd spacing. You see 3-4 teams use even spacing. You have 11 players, you can put them in various positions. Whether you want to put it on the pre-game depth chart as one thing or another, I think is a little bit overrated.
"You play different fronts, you play different spacing, and you teach the techniques of your defense. That is what consistent, techniques that are taught in different defensive systems, whether those teams go from three-man line to a four-man line, or a four-man line to an odd spacing line, or overs to unders, or unders to overs, or over-wides, whatever you want to call it. They will continue to play the same fundamental techniques as they've been teaching for the entire year, for the most part. I think that's what teaching defensive fundamental football is about. It's about fundamentals. Wherever you put them, you've got to people other people in complementary places, however you decide to do that.
"It's pretty straight-forward really ... It's more the teaching, techniques and fundamentals you teach your defensive players, more than it is the 4-3, 3-4 lineup that is so important to put on the flip card."

I've been away for two weeks, but isn't Rome on opposite of Radnich?
I only listen to the Radnich/Bruno face off at 11am, peace to Dan Dibley.
Having been accustomed to getting my sports info on an hourly basis, having the last 16 days worth of NFL developments dropped on me at the same time is information overload. I can't handle this shit, fuck you Al Davis. (as always)

Harbaugh makes quarterbacks. Quarterbacks do not make Harbaugh.
Harbaugh took an absolutely nobody and turned him into the best QB in the history of Div. 2.
Then he took an almost absolute nobody and turned him into the best QB of the year in Div. 1.
Feel the pattern.
(excuse my irrationality plz, but it's just the first nice day as a 9ers fan I've had...well...since we got harbaugh).
Luck was a consensus 4 star player from Houston and was the 2nd to 7th QB prospect in the nation. Had offers from just about everyone.PopeyeJones wrote:

Not that I disagree with your general point that Harbaugh is almost Jimbo Fisher like in coaching QB's.

For those that hate Moss and won't enter that thread.
Randy Moss has been spotted in Philadelphia meeting with representatives from the Philadelphia Eagles at the Capitol Grill tonight according to Howard Eskin of WIP 610. According to reports, the Eagles have been very aggressive in signing Moss despite him filing his retirement papers with the NFL this week, but with Maclin recovering from an undisclosed illness and Desean Jackson still holding out Moss maybe the big name they need to keep the momentum in tact. Insiders predict The Moss signing within a week.

Points for proper usage. I'm a Rabinovich fan, so I'll admit I'm biased and that I enjoy him (YES) despite his obvious flaws. But it is now real entertaining to hear D Bruce run all over him on what used to be his own show. Great moments in awkward radio history. To that point, this morning Jay Mohr was on and compared The Great Radu to a post-stroke Anthony Hopkins in Legends Of The Fall. Classic. Anyways, thread is now about Bay Area sports radio.alpha wrote:good knowledgeTweak Da Leak wrote:Cowherd's a fag but up in norcal its either him or that fat jew bastard Radnich in the morning, and I'm not listening to Radnich talk about the Kardashians and SF football in the morning fagboy.peanut butter wrote:Ya know, I was all ready to come in here and call you a faggot. Got so caught up discussing shit that has nothing to do with anything, I forgot to say that Braylon Edwards is a good signing. I'm not ready to kiss off a 2-14 record just yet. But he's definitely a step in the right direction. Hopefully he is able to kick the dropsies, or atleast tone 'em down. And I also hope that he doesn't take a liking to the local watering holes out here the same way he did in NY.

Edwards is big step up from Ginn. As much as I liked to watch Ginn in college he's proven in the NFL that speed is the only attribute that he has. Edwards is a fine receiver, he's just viewed as a disappointment because of his lofty draft status and his off the field activities.
I didn't think the 9ers were that bad even before these signings, so I don't know if the Luck talk was realistic anyway. I could definitely see Harbaugh making this incarnation of the 9ers a playoff team, especially in that division (I like the Rams myself). They need some of their good players to make big jumps though, and even though I think Alex Smith and Crabtree will improve, it's hard to see them becoming elite at this point.

please don't ever use the words - Alex Smith, Crabtree, and Elite in the same sentence again
Alex Smith is lucky to have a job in the NFL, and Crabtree is AT BEST a number 2 possession WR. I will admit tho, more times than not he does make the first guy miss, but there are mucho opportunities to do that when you don't have the speed to create separation.

Ah, sorry, I was making reference to you talking about Luck, and the chatter about us going 2-14 and getting Luck.
I was just saying that within that relationship I think Harbaugh is more responsible for Luck's success than Luck is for Harbaugh's success.
(of course it was still a mutually beneficial relationship though).
I actually have to semi-defend the Beard on this one. I watched every snap he played last year (all 19 games) and he only had 4 drops all season. Damn near got to 1,000 yds receiving w/ a 'below average' QB. He was actually ranked 12th in drop percentage last year by the oft-reliable Profootballfocus.com. But touche since he still ranks as the worst in the same stat over the past 3 years combined.peanut butter wrote:Hopefully he is able to kick the dropsies, or atleast tone 'em down.

Osi now threatening surgery
There is another chapter in the saga that has become Osi Umenyiora and the New York Giants. The next fight in the [Umenyiora] war is apparently going to be the Battle of Wounded Knee. The latest shot was fired Thursday night when the disgruntled defensive end refused to practice because, according to a Giants spokesman, "he says he has a sore knee." Umenyiora also told the Giants he might "need" surgery on that knee to repair a torn meniscus, according to a source familiar with his situation. If he does, it's likely he'd miss at least some regular-season games. Although the Giants had no official comment on Umenyiora's injury, the fact they said "he says" he's injured was a good indication that they don't believe him -- or at least that they're skeptical of the extent of the injury.

I'm going to miss the Bruno face off, and I was fine with the way the show was when it was just Gary with P-con and Dibs.
So Damon is doing 7 hrs of Radio a day now?
I have loved Jay Mohr since the first time he appeared on the Jim Rome show.

The best part of the show so far is taking place right now. Damon is doing his gay lil three play question game with Kate and Gary, but he's asking relevant questions and they are playing along and giving honest answers. It's kinda cool to hear this side of Gary. He also just said he has more than $5 million in the bank today, and has earned over $10 million in the course of his career.Jayou Ayen wrote:I didn't understand what you were talking about until this morning.peanut butter wrote: Points for proper usage.
