Gloss, can you make this the official sports talk thread? Sometimes I like to comment about something one of our local hacks or someone on ATH said, but it's not really worthy of being it's own thread.
Anyway, I guess that Damon Bruce is the best "pure" sports talk guy in the Bay. If you work for KNBR, you kinda have to be a Giants loving fag, but he's not too bad about it. Eric Brynes, on the other hand, is a complete Giants fag, and a bum of a professional athlete to boot. How he can criticize anyone being who he is, is beyond me.

95.7 the game owns KNBR now. I haven't listened to KNBR in about 3 months.Jayou Ayen wrote:Gloss, can you make this the official sports talk thread? Sometimes I like to comment about something one of our local hacks or someone on ATH said, but it's not really worthy of being it's own thread.

atlanta local sports talk radio is SHIT, except for a couple guys who are really only college football experts. the two live stews are decent but they're national now.
stoney and wojo were my dudes when i lived in the detroit area but they aren't on anymore. overall i definitely didn't realize how lucky i was living around detroit sports talk. it's probably like that in most mid-size markets where the local teams have rabid fans though.

My brother always tries to put me on to 95.7, but I'm so use to hearing familiar voices, whether I hate them or not. I don't listen during the AM commute, but I'd rather hear Dibley than Murph & Mac.alpha wrote:95.7 the game owns KNBR now. Sorry about breaking the chain of command, Gregg.

Max & Marcellus is this best thing to happen to LA radio in eons. Even when they don't talk about sports, the shit they talk about is hilarious.
I'm amazed that Marcellus still gets it in on the West Coast and flys to Bristol on the regular to do NFL commentary for the various shows he hops on.
Max & Marcellus is so good that I don't even change the dial to listen to Jim Rome anymore, and I used to love listenin to dude. Out.

Longtime KNBR personality Ralph Barbieri has been let go, station manager Lee Hammer told Chronicle Sports Editor Al Saracevic on Wednesday.
Hammer would only say Barbieri גis no longer with the station. It was a management decision.ג
Hammer said Barbieriגs on-air partner, Tom Tolbert, would host their show, גThe Razor and Mr. T,ג by himself later Wednesday.
In October, Barbieri dropped the bombshell that he was suffering from Parkinsonגs disease. The revelation came during contract negotiations with the station.
גMy contract is expiring soon,ג Barbieri said at the time, גand if I am to continue at KNBR, Iגd like to start with all our cards on the table, face-up. Iגve gotten to know Lew Dickey (CEO of Cumulus Media, parent company of KNBR) a little bit, and my gut feeling was that he could deal with my situation at an honorable level, so I gave him a call and told him everything.
גHe let me know that KNBR wants me back. He didnגt say on what terms, but the fact that he didnגt view the Parkinsonגs as a red flag, that was a huge relief to me.ג
Barbieri, 66, started working at KNBR in 1984.

Sid Rosenberg fired by WQAM following DUI arrest
Sun Sentinel staff reports
8:20 p.m. EDT, April 10, 2012
WQAM program director Lee Feldman confirmed host Sid Rosenberg has been fired from WQAM following an arrest and DUI charge late last week.
Rosenberg had been off the air this week after the arrest last week, according to Feldman. Rosenberg also was charged with driving with a suspended license, according to the arrest report.
Rosenberg was found around 2 a.m. Thursday in Hollywood curled up on the ground behind his car in the middle of the road with his fingers in his mouth trying to induce vomiting, the arrest report stated.
He told the officer he was heading home to Boca Raton from Tootsie's strip club.
Rosenberg, who has made numerous on-air mentions to his battle with addiction and stints in rehab, had been with WQAM since September of 2009 after a three-year stint at 790 The Ticket.

From 2001-05, Rosenberg worked for WFAN and during that time was the sports anchor for MSNBC'sThe Don Imus Show.
Rosenberg started his broadcasting career in 1997.

I only caught the very end when Tolbert signed off using Ralph's "Angels Fly Because They Take Themselves Lightly" line.
I hate that motherfucker, but I take no pleasure in a person losing their job, especially with his health concerns.
Maybe he ends up covering the Triple A's on 95.7?

I heard about it just randomly tuning in at the end of D Bruce's show. He also dropped the "angels fly.." rather than his usual "sports don't build character..."
So I stuck with KNBR and listened to the first segment of the show formerly known as the Razor and Mr. T. Tom started off trying to make jokes and quickly disintegrated. He ended up damn near breaking down when he first announced it. Tried at first to choke it back, but eventually had to step away from the mic for a moment. From that point on he recovered and went back to being goofy, but shit was real there for a few minutes.
KNBR usually podcasts their show so you may be able to catch it tomorrow on the web site if you are so inclined.
Anyway, I think it sucks. I liked the guy, even though I rarely enjoyed the way he conducted himself. In an era where most media folks are paid just to be shills and dicksuckers (read: Fitz), he was the rare kinda dude to take a stand. Whether you agreed with him or not, I respected his willingness to speak his mind.
And yeah, sucks dude couldn't keep his gig. Especially after like 30 years with the same station. But for some reason, I dont think that he's going to looking for much regular work at his age, especially after years of getting paid $300K annually.
PEACE

I ended up hearing the Tolbert audio last night, and I can definitely empathize with his loss.
I was kidding about Ralph and 95.7, his hatred of Oakland rivals mine of Frisco.
This line from Hartlaub's article sums it up perfectly for me:
Two things can be equally true: Ralph Barbieri drove me crazy, and Iגm very sad that heגs no longer on the air.
http://blog.sfgate.com/thebigevent/2012 ... -barbieri/
Lol at those two dick touchers in that pic.

I know. I just addressed it because it opened to opportunity to mention the fact that he was getting paid three hundred fucking thousand dollars a year to talk for three hours a day about sports. That's absurd. Not to mention, he had issues with showing up on time, took frequent vacations, just generally irked the hell out of many people.Jayou Ayen wrote: I was kidding about Ralph and 95.7, his hatred of Oakland rivals mine of Frisco.
But yeah, in general I agree with you and Hartlaub, who paid a great homage to Ralph with the "two things can be equally true..." line.
All of this is pretty much irrelevant anyway though because soon enough the fine folks over at Cumulus are gonna kill KNBR, just like they have pretty much every other station in a major market.

since pb or jayou hasn't posted this. whether you liked him or not, dude called how he saw it and he got done dirty
Dan Brown wrote the Mercגs news story on Ralph Barbieriגs dismissal by KNBR after decades at the sports-talk station.
This evening, Barbieri called Brown with a statement. Brown passed along the statement to me to make sure we could get it on-line in its entirety.
Here it is:
גRALPH BARBIERI STATEMENT/
(In the wake of his dismissal, longtime KNBR radio voice Ralph Barbieri dictated the following statement to the Mercury News:)
First of all, I want to say I was flattered and humbled by what Tom (Tolbert) said on the air today. Iגve never seen him even close to that emotional before and his words really touched me.
But now, cliche as though it may sound, all I can say is that Iגm weighing my options, which are considerable.
Iגll have more to say later on. For now, I just want to say that Iגve seen a couple of articles that have characterized this as an amicable parting. Well, thatגs not exactly the case.
I came to work (Tuesday) morning with no idea that anything of this nature was afoot, especially since my contract does not expire until Nov. 1.
I was immediately told that the general manager wanted to see me. I went to his office and the program director was there as well. I was told that I was being terminated and that today, April 10, was to be my last day at KNBR.
They presented me with about 100 pages of legal documents and told me to get back to them after I had read them.
Then, I was told to get my belongings and turn in my card key, after which I was גescortedג out of the building by a KNBR management person.
When I got into my car, I tried to access about 20 voicemail messages, but I found out that somebody had cut out my access.
The whole process took about 7 minutes. Letגs see: 7 minutes for 28 years at KNBR. Thatגs four years a minute. I have to admit thatגs pretty time efficient ג not to mention classy.
Thatגs about all I can say. But after the dust clears, Iגll have more of an idea of what path I may pursue.

Mike Missanelli at 2 pm weekdays, easily the best sports talk station
If you want pure comedy wait till the "Sound Off" part of the show
I tune in to Francesa once in awhile just for the comedy
