No more James Neal. Traded to the Predators for Hornqvist and Paling.

A trade which makes so little sense, it's astounding. Normally you make moves like that to clear cap space, but Tampa retained 1/3 of Gagner's salary. So they added $1.60m of Gagner's salary, subtracted Crombeen's $1.15m cap hit, and wound up $450k in the hole for the next two seasons with only a 6th round pick to show for it. Not the most clever move.

They got some cap relief from shipping out Teddy Purcell, sure, but that's a totally separate transaction. I can't make sense of it.

Free agency at noon. Not a lot of big names out there this year. See what happens.

Today will be a tougher day for Positive A than he expected. If it wasn't Canada Day, I'd express mail over a wholesale package of kleenex.

Chiasson could be good. It's a decent return.
Buy my mixtape.

Be glad its only a 3 year deal. Would have been idiotic to give him a long-term deal considering how inconsistent he is.

Yes. Giving him 3 years means he'll actually still be playing well for his next contract.

Flyers are pretty much handcuffed right now. Emery signed for 1 year/$1m, DEL goalie Rob Zepp for 1 year/$600k, but until somebody takes Vinny off our hands, we're stuck.

I guess the hope is that with the UFA C options severely dwindling, we can still get Nashville to take him on.

Surprise of the day: the Blackhawks, already over the salary cap, sign Brad Richards.
Washington, in a desperate bid to improve their D, signed Niskanen for 7 years, $5.75m. Slight gamble. Not as outright mind-bottling as them signing Orpik to a 5 year, $5.5m deal, though.

orpik is a solid defensive d-man. and with ovechkin on your team, when he's on the ice the other team is pretty much on the PP so they need some solid defence.

why in the shit did the flyers sign lecavelier to that ridiculous contract in the first place?

Word is flyers might be looking to trade Lecavalier now that his $2mill bonus was due to him on July 1. He just became a lot cheaper to unload.

Fuckin Brad RIchards is living it up right now. $20 mill in buyout money but will still get a regular salary next year for a nice $2mill with a top 3 contender. Everyone says he fell off (myself included) but he's the one laughing right now.

Giroux was arrested for repeatedly grabbing the buttocks of a male police officer. Alcohol is believed to have been involved.

Orpik has been awful for the past two seasons. He is a shell of his former self. And he can't stay healthy ever.

Niskanen is okay, but he is the softest dude in the planet. He just gets man handled in the corners and in front of the net.

Capitals overpaid for both of them, but that seems like the trend yesterday. Engelland got $3M a year from the Flames.

Central in particular is stacked.
Free agent frenzy was fun, but man these GMs can't be complaining about bad deals any time soon. Some really attrocious ones. I love the Richards deal. And even Ehrhoff's deal.

Good question. It's really not a bad contract if you can use him as a 1C or 2C, but with Giroux-Schenn-Couturier down the middle, he was never going to center one of the top 3 lines. They tried him at LW, and that didn't work at all. He was apparently excited to play in Lavy's system, but that lasted all of 3 games. I have no complaints about Vinny's abilities, but $4.5m for a guy not playing his natural position (or playing his natural position on the 4th line) just isn't cutting it.

Also, CLOLde Giroux. Absolutely hilarious. The Flyers late season motto was #ClutchTime, and Claude took that with him into the postseason. It's just so stupid and silly that I can't even be mad he got arrested. I don't care what he does, as long as he stays off the golf course.
