Fuck that. I'm a Phillies fan first and foremost. I have the right to cheer for or bitch about anybody on my team, no matter what i've said in the past.
Also, all i said about Ibanez was:
1. We overpaid in a buyers market. Which we did and still believe this.
2. It probably isn't smart to give a 4 year deal to a 37 year old outfielder.
3. By every defensive metric known to man, Ibanez was rated either as bad or worse than Burrell. He is playing better defense than he ever has in his career. No way for anybody to predict this.
4. Burrell for two years at 16 mil is a better value if they are both healthy. (you even agreed with me on this Poppa)
5. I said all along that I LOVED his bat and that he would rake in CBP and in our lineup.
Get off my ass people lol.

you could've predicted the better defense which i did make a note of before in the offseason thread.
Safeco is a pretty spacious OF. There is more room for error there. CBP is not as big.
I did agree that burrell at 2 years and 16 million was a better value but i wasn't adamant that ibanez was a bad signing.....which you were lambasting amaro on.

I was more pissed that we used our budget money on hitting instead of pitching. There were lots of cheap bats available and we needed starting pitching (and still do). The signing looks a lot better now that Ibanez has turned into Albert Pujols, but I still think signing Derek Lowe and a cheaper bat would've been the smarter play.
Also, most of the more advanced defensive metrics take Park Factor into effect.

i'm a big fan of UZR (Ultimate Zone Rating), which indirectly takes into account park factor by taking into account the number of ball converted into outs and the number of balls that are hits in each fielders zone of play.Gregg Popabitch wrote:oh? which ones. i'm always open to learning about new statistics.
Last 3 years:
Raul Ibanez
2006: -5.8
2007: -20.5
2008: -12.1
Pat Burrell
2006: -10.5
2007: -17.6
2008: -4.3
A negative number is the number of runs the player costs in the field compared to the league average. If you average these numbers out, Burrell actually cost the Phillies two runs per year less than Ibanez cost the Mariners from '06-'08. Ibanez's UZR rating this year is 5.8, meaning he's actually saved us almost six runs so far. I'd love to believe its for real, and like I've said before it really does look like he's rejuvenated now that he's playing for a contender, but I'm still skeptical that a regression to the mean isn't coming.
John Dewan's +/- system also had both of them pegged as below-average defensive players.
Go phillies.

Actually, here's a small list of people the Yankees don't hit hard under any circumstances, including if said pitcher didn't have any arms to begin with:
- Roy Halladay
- Pitchers who wear red and aren't named Josh Beckett
- 30-something year old who was probably bussing tables at his local Applebees 2 weeks ago
- Oliver Perez
Feel free to add on
