Yeah. Too easy. But still. By WAR he's projected to be the best SS in the game, and third best player in the entire NL, without hitting a lick

According to Baseball Prospectus' FRAA (fielding runs above average), the best season Ordonez had was in 97, when he had a 6.5.
Last year, Andrelton had a 10. This year he is projected for 19. In 2013, he had 26.5.

According to Baseball References dWAR, the best season Ordonez had was in 99, when he had a 4
Last year, Andrelton had a 3.9. In 2013, he had a 5.4

According to FanGraphs, the best season Ordonez had was in 99, when he had a 41.1 defensive rating
Last year, Simmons had a 22. In 2013, he had a 31.6. Steamer projects him to have a 28 this year.

It's tough to compare defensive data across eras, because it changes so much over time, we have so much more available data now, and that says nothing of shifts. Plus I don't know whether all these systems adjust for offensive environment. All things considered though, I think Andrelton is the superior defender.

Recent ones from Sox ST. He looks normal Pablo size. Which is fine, except when you consider that this was the time of year that he typically showed up a little thinner, before packing on pounds over the rest of the season. If he's showing up big already, and tends to get bigger, its likely gonna get ugly. And I know he doesn't give a fuck. He just got paid and probably spent the summer eating, drinking and fucking. But it does send a shitty message to get paid $100M, know that the first thing people are gonna talk about is your weight, and still show up to camp outta shape. He can be a frustrating player and personality. It'll be interesting to see how he handles more scrutiny.

New pace of play rules suck but they are probably the least offensive of all the rules they could have implemented, at least. If they made a pitching clock I would have gone ape-shit.

I just don't get how replay challenges are logistically going to work now. Personally I was always in the anti-replay camp for mostly these fucking pace of play reasons they are desperately trying to "fix" now. Fuck.

So Ben Lindbergh from Grantland and Sam Miller of Baseball Prospectus, cohosts of the Effectively Wild podcast (the best podcast in the history of sports), were recently hired as the head of baseball operations for an independent league team here in Northern California called the Sonoma Stompers. If you've ever heard the show (which is highly recommended, because its the greatest podcast in the history of sports), its basically breaking baseball. They take extreme concepts, and try to apply them to baseball. And now they are in charge of a team. And they'll be writing a book about the season. So, in summary: listen to Effectively Wild, the greatest podcast in the history of sports. Also, if you're in remote northern California, let me know, so we can go to a Stompers game. And finally, if you have weird baseball skills or theories, fuckin send them an email or something because they might get you a job or at least some publishing rights or some shit I dunno.

Boston signs Moncada. The rich keep getting richer.
Except for the Phillies, of course.

They could. They've allocated the most money in baseball to international signings, especially in the short term, because their long term ability to sign foreign players is about to be severely limited. I think Moncada just opted for another squad.
