school me on rock

ok, so it goes like this...

up to this point most of my musical research has been related to jazz or hiphop, occasionally funk or blues.

but now, I want to learn about rock, and I hardly know where to start. I do already have records from hendrix, leppelin, zappa, sabbath, steely dan, santana, the doors, jethro tull, traffic, pink floyd, and the beatles in my collection (also mahavishnu orchestra if you count that as rock), but other than that I've got nothing.

I'm currently checking out some material by the following artists, whom i know next to nothing about:

buffalo springfield
jefferson airplane
quicksilver messenger service
savoy brown
king crimson
brian eno
david bowie
dr john
love
roxy music
soft machine
sugarloaf
tangerine dream
the byrds
the move
todd rundgren
yes
brecker brothers
cream
allman brothers band

steer me in the right direction. all suggestions are welcome, but please... nothing from later than 79. I have no interest in that at all (with the exception of faith no more)

well, you've got a good start there, sparky. but to say you have no interest in anything post-79, that's kinda douchey. plenty of good music post-79.

well, I dont mean to be douchey, thats just not what I trying to hear right now. I actually know a good bit about nineties rock, since thats when I was growing up, but thats not the purpose of this thread. I just want to learn about 60's - 70's rock.

eighties rock (from what I've heard) I just dont like. sorry.

aside from yes (prog rock was already kinda too gay at that point), the list you have is as good as anything that somebody else can recommend you. just go by that, it should keep you occupied for a while

not the kind that most people here seem to, I'll grant you that.

I had that lp and I just traded it to the second hand records store last week, along with some other shit. a couple of the tracks on there are cool, but its not like I cant turn on the radio for fifteen minutes and hear one of them... if I wanted to.

^^ this is def an interesting album worth checking out, but i gotta say i was a little dissapointed with it. I got more in terms of blues/rocking from Jonny Jenkins' Ton-Ton Macoute and in terms of crazy voodoo weirdness from the Exuma S/t

dr john's version of 'i walk on gilded splinters' is tremendous though, no denying that

I have the self titled, maggot brain, cosmic slop, lets take it to the stage, and one nation under a groove. I just wasn't counting them as rock.
