New Mastodon video for Divinations.

Involves polar explorers, human sacrifice, cannibalism, unfrozen caveman guitarist and a CGI yeti.

CGI Yeti needs a movie where he attempts to adapt to city living with adverse consequences and hijinks. Maybe in Portland, OR.

I was determined to let this be the first album in years that I would not listen to an internet leak and wait for the official release.

That didn't work.

It is great.

Yeah, it's grown on me too. Hearing some of the new stuff live was the turning point. The way it seemed like such a natural fit within the set was reassuring.

Yeah, Last Baron is fucking awesome. Also really like Oblivion and The Czar.

Album has really grown on me.

Yeah, I was skeptical and haterish, but I'm really psyched about it.

Didn't peep the Isis. Have never really liked them that much, figure I'll be lukewarm on this one too.

My take:

(it's more dramatic to introduce my thoughts on this with the "my take" above, so you can ignore it...obviously, it's my take)

As a whole, I'm not a fan of Mastadon. I haven't liked anything of theirs enough to get crazy. Not a hater. I've seen them live (twice) and they are pretty fucking great, but I don't listen to them. Ever. Until now.

MT1 was like, if you don't like this, you never will like them. So, I overcame my laziness and downloaded it.

Really great shit. Accessible. The songs stick with me. Shit is like early Sabbath. I sort of feel like even if you don't like metal, but you are curiousth about it, this is some good shit.

Second new album in a row that I liked from first listen (Kylesa's being the other -- not bad to see them together in a few weeks time, twice).

So this is the part where I tell you that if you like things that are good, you will like this.

I like this, I just find the songs a bit too long and I dunno, liked the vocals better when they were more screamed. Good to see they can afford vocal lessons these days though.

If you look at youtube clips of the new songs, you'll see that no vocal lessons have been taken, Brent sounds like a drunken pirate audition for a guest spot on the next Running Wild album.

regardless, his lack of vocal ability is endearing and he really sounds great on the record, like the bastard son of Ozzy and that dwarf from lord of the rings.

ok this is without doubt the most diverse and dense album i have ever heard. I am really loving this so far only time will tell how it stacks up against the other three albums i dont think it fair to compare yet but as a huge mastodon fan i am pumped and hopefully i can find a way to get tickets for the sold out nyc shows

I started humming oblivion at a truly inappropriate time at work. Record has grown on me like a hive.

The making of DVD is dope. Tons of great studio footage and lots of awesome interviews.

The track-by-track commentary is a great idea. Would like to see more folks do this for their albums.

That high-quality rip is great. I suggest switching it out as MT1 instructed me to do.

Anyone else think that Quintessence is the best Van Halen song since 1982?

Am I deluded (about this)?

I really wanted to dislike this album but I can find no fault in it. Its not my favorite of theirs but its highly listenable. I enjoy the vocals and the chorus on Oblivian sends chills up my spine. I was obsessed with that song for 3 days straight on repeat.

well done.

nice list, one more Remission track would have sealed the deal though.
