no idea about Merengue. but i like Salsa, as you could guess from my sig. not am expert by any means though.
ive heard some not so well known Salsa music fromk a Dj friend whos from Argentina and has a lot of South American Records, but imo you can dig through the Fania label and it wont get much better than their classic material.

if you start at flamenco with any flamenco artist, you will hear some really good salsa and merengue without having to listen to shitty salsa and merengue artists

i recommend

STRUNZ & FARAH

get the LIVE album

alright cool thanks. I'll find that strunz and farah album. that panama album looks good more on the central american tip with the cumbia.

Is it just me or does the term "salsa" encompass an ENORMOUS and diverse body of work that spans era, countries, and styles? Some of the modern shit they play at my barbershop that is called salsa is the absolute pinnacle of faggocity but I've heard other stuff that's completely different.

My guess is that the best music that is usually labeled Salsa comes from Puerto Rico in the late 60s and early 70s and has lyrics about rugged gangster shit sung all pretty. But I could be wrong.

Would anyone with a more formalized understanding of these genres and subgenres like to comment?

I grew up being forced to hear it and don't really dig it that much these days because of that.

I will say this though, any dude who can dance to salsa and merengue is guaranteed to get laid at least every once in a while so don't hate on dudes who take lessons. Their vag appeal increases by about 19%

the percussive rhythms are originally Cuban not PR.
the most important city in the 60s and 70s was New York City though. Ray Barretto, Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri (both more latin Jazz), Willie Colon were raised in NY
Hector Lavoe pretty early in his career and Chamaco Ramirez later moved to New York aswell like Ruben Blades who was from Panama though and not Puerto Rico.
Fania was a New Yorker label.
many of the important musicians though were 1st or 2nd generation Puerto Rican immigrants and the music moved back to Puerto Rico and other parts of Latin America

the lyrics were diverse not solely about gangster shit, they could encompass basically everything just like any other genre. but some of those guys were probably pretty badass. (half of them were from the Bronx)
since Salsa is also a style of dance its true that there is a wide variety of music that can be labeled salsa. over the years the music diversified and there are "subgenres". it pretty much comes down to wether the rhythm is suited for dancing Salsa or not.

im not into the modern stuff ive heard but as far as i know its alive and thriving in Puerto Rico and probably in Latin communities all around

eddie palmierie, lavoe, la lupe, ray barreto, tito puente etc, ruben!

dope!

word

learn the dance, then u will start to get it

its from Haiti originally, folkloric sacred msuic, u can still hear the beat in haitian roots msuic (rasine and rara) as well as in konpa. initially it was jsut drums and singing

konpa, bachata and merengue are all connected as well as conencted to the folkloric music of hispanola, the merengue folkloric dominican msuic on tamboras (they play tamboras and congas in popular merengue too) and the rara and rasine and folkloric msuic of haiti thats one bitg pool of interconnectivirty!!! also linked to the zouk and gwo ka of the other frnehc colonized islands

Whats that famous juan luis guerra song with the pretty horn line? That one is good. They play it all the time.

Putomayo or one of those rough guide companies have done a few merengue and dominican music collections that are worth tracking down.
