DM Stith - Heavy Ghost

Over the past few years my hip hop consumption has dropped drastically. I am not one of those people who blames the music itself, sure you have to wade through a ocean of shit to get to some gems, and while that hasn't always been the case, it has been for some time. In the past that never stopped me, I always hunted and searched for new and exciting hip hop to listen too. A few years back something changed, and it was more me than it was hip hop. I got old, and I got tired. On top of that I was on the road about 200 days a year and surrounded by hip hop. I guess I just got sick of it, I compare it to someone who works in an ice cream shoppe, eventually you get sick just looking at ice cream.

Since hip hop covered about 80% of the music I listened to, i needed to find something new to occupy my time. This lead me to a lot of new groups and sounds that I hope to share with you all.

Today I would like to share an album from David Michael Stith, aka DM Stith called Heavy Ghost on Asthmatic Kitty Records. Asthmatic Kitty Records is the home to artists like Sufjan Stevens, who's album Illinoise is pretty stellar and I recommend checking it if you get the chance. Anyway back to DM Stith. A friend sent me this album with the disclaimer that it was dark and haunting, two things that are right up my alley.

It took me a few listens to really get into the album, but now I listen to it a few times a day. If I had to compare it to something I would say it sounds like Jeff Buckley if he had some crazy broad like Tori Amos playing piano and John Byron playing strings to add the atmosphere. Or maybe an even better description would be, if the score from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind had lyrics. If that sounds like something you would be interested in I suggest checking it out.
