^each to his own and all that. i think it just frustrates people because it's one specific sound that seems to dominate the whole genre in a lot of ways.

skream is an example of a producer who still makes a lot of amazing music, but when you actually go and see him in a club nowadays it's 100% tearout wobble for an hour, with every tune getting licked back unnecessarily, and it's just irritating. i love a bit of aggro wobble when it's done well but i can't bear to listen to it all night.

all i would say is that in joker, burial, digital mystikz and martyn you have mentioned four of the very best artists dubstep has to offer - they really deserve another chance because they're kind of the cream of the crop... and since coki (digital mystikz) is basically responsible for inventing wobble dubstep, he is one person that you definitely need to listen to a bit.

Yeah, I don't know how you can listen to dubstep and not have some appreciation for DnB but whatever.

I know I can, that's probably the main reason why I can't listen to more than 20 minutes of the wobbly stuff. For the majority of the stuff I like that falls under the 'Dubstep' umbrella, appreciation of Basic Channel-Dub Techno, Instrumental Hip Hop, House and 2-Step seems to be a more important prerequisite than being a fan of DnB.

That's sort of like hating rap music and being a fan of Anticon, I guess.

I get it, but I find dubstep and dnb very connected, at least when heard live.

dubstep is definitely closely connected to jungle/drum & bass.. but only in the same way it's connected to dub/reggae, minimal, techno, hip hop, hardcore, house, grime, etc. at this point dubstep exists partially as a reinterpretation of every other pre-established electronic genre

if there's one definitive core connection it's definitely uk garage/2-step

just to say, this single is great. ramp 12" got a bit samey after my initial rantings (i concede that the hyperdub single is way better) but i've been obsessed with the a-side to this all week. when zomby's on, he's on.

no doubt, I'm just blown away by people who are into dubstep, who claim to "not feel" dnb. It's so obvious a MAJOR influence.

I don't see how you can escape it.

Yes dnb largely influenced dubstep, and many dnb acts have branched out into dubstep, but you can easily distinguish between the two. There's a major difference in tempo which is audibly significant.

Compare music by Spor or Goldie to artists such as Joker or Coki, they sound nothing alike. There's probably a lot of close interweaving of sounds going on out there, but I tend to stay away from dubstep that leans towards a predominantly dnb/techno/house sound. I can't get down with the hyperactive jumpy upbeat euro swagger, no matter how much i'm exposed to it. I'm more into filthy headbangers with over-the-top bass and drums that ain't so intense/extreme.

I'm probably in the minority, though.

XLR8R recently took a closer look at U.K. producer Untold (a.k.a. Jack Dunning), whose handful of releases on Hessle Audio, Hotflush, and his own Hemlock imprint have quickly established him among a handful of artists pushing dubstep beyond bass-in-your-face nonsense. We figured that if anyone was going to provide a look at where the genre was headed, it would be Untold, so we enlisted him to put together this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Taking an open-minded approach and liberally utilizing his stock of unreleased tunes, Untold slots heady and experimental tracks alongside animated dancefloor cuts, and even finds time to dabble in some classic house and B-more club. If this mix is any indication, dubstep's future remains bright.

it's weird. i've been getting all the 12"s from the hyperdub comp, and thought the first two were pretty substandard by their previous... er... standards. but the compilation is really good as a whole. dunno bout the burial track tho.

and i am beyond chuffed to finally have hq versions of aidy's girl & level nine. the kyle hall oats remix on the aidy's girl 12" is ace as well, instant purchase.
