Not sure if this shit fits the genre here or not but these guys are friends of mine and they got a steel guitar but they also play Motorhead type of shit and have hilarious lyrics. They are way better live than on their recordings.

not exactly alt country but i think you would enjoy Wovenhand. Same guy that was in 16 Horsepower.

I don't like him when he tries to make rock or alt-pop, but Ryan Adam's makes great alt-country:

Califone's cool too. Roots & Crowns is a great album by them. This is pretty adventurous for alt-country, but I think it still qualifies. Their singer has a great, gravelly voice:

Dinosaur Jr. has a great alt-country song on each of their last two albums:

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eSXtgqdmXMw?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eSXtgqdmXMw?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

"This is All I Came to Do" off Beyond is the other, but I can't find a youtube clip of the album version.
