Beck

Post by vinylpops »

What does the :phila: think about Beck?

I'm not too familiar with his last two albums, but I was interested to see music fans' opinions. I was obsessed back in the Stereopathetic - Odelay days.

I dug Sea Changes a lot too.

Mellow Gold will always hold an odd yet special place in my heart, so I love that one.

Mutations was dope.

It's been awhile since I've listened to his more lighthearted work, but he messed with a lot of styles and always pulled it off pretty well.

A big reason why I asked is whenever I bring up Beck I get a lot of eye rolls and 'fuck that dude'. Do rock aficionados think the dude sold out or something? I never got the hate. I always thought he was a pretty innovative artist with a damn good discog.

midnight vultures and sea changes are the two that stay in heavy rotation.

beck is great. what other modern artist does so many genres so proficiently? he released odelay, mutations, midnite vultures and sea change in succession-- all really good to great albums, all totally different. he gets props just for that alone. the new stuff isn't bad either.

hating on him because he's too popular or too scientological is just silly. i only mention these things because i can't really think of any other reasons people might hate. beck is a gem.

Speaking of stupidly underrated-- Dangermouse.

Midas touch.

Good to hear that there is no hate from other music buffs. Beck is the shit, but since I don't follow the genre much anymore, I thought there was some weird hate towards him.

He's fairly versatile and put on a nice live show when I saw him years back.

Yeah, he seems like an artist's artist and I'll always check for anything he puts out even if it's hit or miss for my personal taste as his genres range quite a bit. He's had a hell of a career and has worked with some great artists.

Not a huge fan but love some of his stuff. Only some tracks from The Information, Midnight Vultures, and Modern Guilt are on my player so I need to go back and re-listen to everything, particularly Sea Changes and Guero.

I loved the 10 minute psychedelic response he did for the whole Harry Patch debacle last year: http://stereogum.com/101791/new_beck_-_ ... -the-beef/ - very interesting misunderstanding/beef.

"Odelay" "Mellow gold" and "Sea changes" are all near classics or classics. "Midnite vultures" and "one foot in the grave" are right behind. "mutations" will forever be wack.

I revisted "Midnigte Vultures" recently and that is is a very well crafted party album...terrific sound engineering and mixing.

Odelay was a remarkable album. I loved "Sea Changes". Dude's never done anything weak, though the album with Danger Mouse was disappointing.

It's amazing how he dabbles in just about every music genre, and never seams out of place.

Hell Naw...Mutations is my favorite joint, psychedelic as fuck. That's a personal choice though, Odelay is definitely the best all around album. The Information would be my third favorite, followed by Midnite Vultures and Sea Changes.

I like Beck...'Mutations' is lyrically and musically a masterpiece

Beck's problem, if there is a problem, is the "whiteboy attempting black music genres" problem... which isn't really a problem.

Never understood why he wasn't embraced by hip-hop fans earlier in his career. I guess a lot of it had to do with this his look and the type of hip-hop that was big at the time, but Odelay was basically a rap album and a damn good one at that.

Has anyone been checking out the Record Club cover thing he's been doing? http://www.beck.com/recordclub/

The Velvet Underground & Nico session was dope. I just wish I could download the tracks somewhere...

I think it's political. In the post I did about Phantogram, which is my favorite non-rap album this year, it's very much the same. Whoever Barsuk commissioned to push their record did not cater to hip hop press. That's sad, because I know most heads that know about bands like Beck and Phantogram love them.
