Yeah Sanford Parker and Bruce Lamont from Yakuza are definitely in a number of different bands. Some bands that at least one of those two are in: Minsk, Circle of Animals (Old Wax Trax style band with one of the dudes from the revolting cocks), Bloodiest, Buried at Sea, and now Nachtmystium.

Other than that though, there's actually a pretty solid scene around here, again Sanford Parker has his hand in a decent amount of these bands as well on the production side. But some bands that are definitely worthwile around here just off the top of my head: Black September, Indian, Bible of the Devil, Anatomy of a Habit, Chicago Thrash Ensemble.

Also you have the more well known bands like Lair of the Minotaur, Lord Mantis, Pelican, and Weekend Nachos. There's also a plethora of sub par death metal coming out of the south side that's not really worth mentioning.
you forgot Sweet Cobra and Raise The Red Lantern. Not to mention Emperor Cabs and isnt Tom Denney a Chicagoan?

Yeah not really a big Sweet Cobra fan actually, find them kinda boring for the most part.

But holy shit, wasn't previously aware of Raise the Red Lantern, damn, sounds fucking excellent thanks for the heads up.

yeah Sweet Cobra aint my bag either. Raise The Red Lantern is pretty good. My old band played a couple shows with them a few years back. At least two of the guys in that band are the guys who build Emperor cabs and the drummer was that guy Jim from Yakuza.

My favorite Chicago bands are Weekend Nachos, fucking Indian (Slights and Abuse!) and probably Nachtmystium. Minsk and the rest of them are too boring and fartsy for me.

I've been disappointed by a lot of albums I was really looking forward to the past few years- 2nd Black Tusk, Howl full length, last HOF, the new In Solitude, seems like the new Toxic Holocaust is gonna suck- but if the next Lord Mantis doesn't tear a hole in the universe, there's going to be hell to pay.

all my friends have been saying that the new In Solitude is a big improvement over the first, haven't listened though, I'm content with that Portrait album for now for that style.

Probably depends on whether you think the last one's trebley vocals high in the mix, over present bass and overall echoey production was a liability or a plus. Those were some of the things I loved about it, and they seem to be missing from the new one.

Looks like we have a new contender for worst idea ever.

Secret Recording Project?

A few months ago our own Kirk Hammett hinted at a new Metallica project that's "not really 100 percent a Metallica record." While Kirk may have jumped the gun a little (and has since been properly punished with a series of push-ups!), we are more than proud to announce that we have just completed recording a full length album that is a collaboration with none other than the legendary Lou Reed.

Ever since we had the pleasure of performing with Lou at the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden in October of 2009, we have been kicking around the idea of making a record together. Some of you astute Bay Area residents may have picked up news of recent Lou Reed sightings in the greater San Francisco area and we have indeed been working at our home studio at HQ on and off over the last few months. In what would be lightning speed for a Metallica related project, we recorded ten songs during this time and while at this moment we're not exactly sure when you'll hear it, we're beyond excited to share with you that the recording sessions wrapped up last week.

A true innovator and easily one of the most influential songwriters, musicians, and performers in rock music history, Lou's work with the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist has such an enduring quality that he has long been revered and respected by us and many of our peers. We can't wait for you to listen to the finished record, so as we like to hear ourselves say around here, keep watching this spot for updates . . . we'll be back with more details as they come together.

There's been a bit of speculation but we will be releasing the new full-length album from U.S. black metal enigma LEVIATHAN in the latter half of the fall, if all goes accordingly. Fuck yes. I don't know about you guys, but I don't wanna live in a world where knocking a bitch out and fucking her with your tattoo gun stops you from releasing great music. Plus I enjoyed Lurker of Chalice quite a bit.

Yeah, sadly have to second this. Especially the new In Solitude. Multiple listens in, and save for a couple of tracks I'm having a hard time getting into it. I just don't understand the overly polished production on this one, why fuck with a good thing? I loved the self titled album but damn this new album is disappointing as hell.
