Dalecooper Presents...The Good, The Bad & The Remixed (dalecooper, 2007)
Image

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V5QGVA4Z
Here's something a little different. Musical alchemist and Reggae Reviews contributor (see guest review of Soul Deep above) Dale Cooper (or dalecooper, if you like) has mashed up a dozen Sizzla tunes with the soundtracks from 10 old spaghetti Westerns, a wacky venture that's actually not as wacky as it initially seems, since A) reggae artists have co-opted Western movie mythology for years, from acts like Lone Ranger, Clint Eastwood, and Reggae Cowboys to songs like The Upsetters' "Return of Django" and Josey Wales' "Bush Wacked," and B) Sizzla is no stranger to musical experimentation. Thus, it all comes together quite naturally, the airy, melancholy movie music from composers Ennio Morricone, Luis Bacalov, and Bruno Nicolai lending an epic feel to Sizzla's towering vocals. You'd expect the DJ's more laid-back tunes to be paired with the mellow music -- and indeed, the album kicks off with "I Was Born" over the iconic theme to The Good, The Bad and The Ugly in an awesomely cohesive juxtaposition -- but Cooper doesn't shy away from blazing dancehall tracks like "Come On," "Karate," and one of the best hybrids, "To the Point," its ethereal soundtrack tempering the digital riddim's fire while layers of gunshots and whistles add a playful touch. Other standouts include "Only Takes Love" -- an instinctive fit for this collection, seeing as the original music (the Red Alert riddim) already had a Western-infused strummy guitar -- as well as the Nyabinghi take on "Somehow" and the dramatic "That's OK," plus a cool dancehall instrumental, "Mexican Standoff." Although it's a free, not-for-profit venture (available for download at www.specialagentdalecooper.wordpress.com or here), The Good, The Bad & The Remixed sports a remarkably clean, professional sound, the nifty cover art and liner notes indicative of the level of effort involved. This sort of album might not suit everyone's tastes and may have more of a camp appeal to some, but it's a sharp product that showcases genuine craftsmanship and much-appreciated innovation. Cooper joked (or not...?) that he might follow this up with Bounty Killer tunes over John Carpenter soundtracks, a heavenly bad boy teaming that's sure to "mash up" the place.

Track Listing
1. I Was Born [Death Rides Mix]
Act 1: Trouble Brewin'
2. To the Point [Fistful of Sartana Mix]
3. Come On [Almeria Flex Mix]

10. Heard of Dem [ Death of Silence Mix]

Scratch fans drooled on themselves when this epic 3-CD box set was released, and rightly so. Dubs, alternate mixes, previously unreleased takes, and a well-written 50-page booklet all amount to a fans' dream. It also amounts to a set that newcomers to Perry's music might find repetitive, wasteful, and monotonous -- particularly after listening to four versions of Junior Murvin's "Police & Thieves" (followed immediately by the "Police and Thieves"-rhythmed "Bad Weed"). Still, there are a lot of Perry standards here that all reggae listeners should have, from the aforementioned "Police & Thieves" to Max Romeo's rumbling "War in a Babylon" and "Norman" to Lee Perry's own nutty "Roast Fish & Corn Bread" and "Curly Locks" to the lovers tunes "Groovy Situation" and "To Be a Lover" to the stellar instrumental "Vibrate On." Most of the better-known tunes are available on Island's Reggae Greats set -- a more cost-worthy alternative for beginners -- but then again, you don't get such Scratch landmark songs like Devon Irons'/Russell's vibrant "Vampire," The Heptones' "Sufferers Time," The Meditations' roots classics "No Peace" and "Much Smarter" (AKA "Think So"), Errol Walker's though-provoking duo "In These Times" and "John Public," and the haunting "Bird in Hand." On the flip side, Arkology is so specialized, you get dubs/alternate mixes/DJ versions of tunes like the Heptones' "Mr. President," "Party Time," and "Why Must I" without the originals. What, do the compilers have something against the Heptones or something? Still, since I'm a Perry (and Heptones) fan, I already have the original versions, and I appreciate the specialization of Arkology, even though I realize that it's not for everyone. Please do not think that this compilation is by any means a complete collection of Perry's best work; not included are his early collaborations or some of his more rare stuff featured on Trojan's Open the Gate and The Upsetters' Build the Ark.

I have no idea, but here's the soul reggae track that the Bullwackies covered:

Jackie Mittoo - Autumn Sounds
http://www.zshare.net/audio/20102523c0d99bc6/

Jackie has another extremely dope version on his mid-70s "Drum Song" LP, which, unfortunately, is nowhere to be found on the internet:

I'll have to dig it out one of these days.

holy shit we need to find this bad (the LP, not the EP) a dude goes down to ethiopia, records a bunch of stuff from addis musicians, then goes back and dubs it. basically you got a 'king tubby meets mulatu' situation here, which is something i've been dreaming of finding for a while. shit is pretty fire, every sample i've found is great and the reviews are through the roof

googling turned up nothing so far, this is the goal of my weekend now

pressure sounds is putting out a sweet sweet new early dub compilation by Jimmy Radway, who i'm not at all familiar with

the samples in that link are great, the sound is very much in vein of Keith Hudson and Dub Specialist that Roy posted before

I usually do much less reggae in the winter, it just doesn't feel right when it's 20 degrees out, but this was too good to pass up

1. Rockstone - (with Native)
2. Black Tracks - (with Native)
3. Black Tracks Version - (with Native)
4. Great God Over in Zion - (with Boston J
5. In a Strange Land - (with Native)
6. Late September in May - (with Native)
7. Late September in May Version - (with N
8. King Solomon's Mines - (with Native)
9. In the Land of Make Believe - (with Nat
10. Piano Country - (with Native/Little Mad
11. Meet Mr. Nobody - (with Native)
12. Meet Mr. Nobody Version - (with Native)

I've only heard one single from Native prior to this, Late September in May. The dub on the bside is one of my favorite finds of last summer, one of those deep dark versions that pushes the boundaries of reggae far into outer edges of psychadelia. It sounds like it was underground in a rusty bucked of pcp. Here it is:

<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/sh ... on=8,0,0,0" width="335" height="28" id="divplaylist"><param name="movie" value="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=6305278-e7d" /><embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=6305278-e7d" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashpl ... d></object>

So today I stumbled over this thing, and naturally i'm pretty cysed. A quick skim-through reveals that a whole bunch of material comprable to the track above. I vastly underrated the vocal version of that song, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. So enough bullshit, here's the link

http://www.mediafire.com/file/myuucyzhjfj/Rockstone_ Native_s Adventures With Lee Perry At The Black Ark... September 1977.zip

official story/review, if you feel like reading

This fascinating album has sort of a strange history. Wayne Jobson, who had already put out a Jamaican single ("Mother Country," produced by Errol Thompson with his old band Little Madness), had a chance to play some of the songs he had been writing with his brother Brian for Lee "Scratch" Perry at Perry's legendary Black Ark Studio one September day in 1977. Perry was enthusiastic about what he heard and was eager to produce the songs, particularly since, as Perry declared, Jobson was an Arawak Indian. Jobson, who was a sixth generation Jamaican with an English, African, Spanish, and Scottish heritage, was unable to convince Perry that he wasn't Arawak, but plans went forward to track the songs. Jobson assembled his then-current band, Native, and with veteran Jamaican producer and mentor Joe Higgs along as a percussionist, started work on the tracks with Perry at Black Ark, coming up with rough mixes and version dubs of maybe half a dozen songs. Jobson took these rough tapes to London to shop then around to labels and was able to wrangle an album deal with Arista Records. He then returned to Kingston and Black Ark ready to finish up the project with Perry. But both Perry and his legendary studio were now in the process of a maddening descent into chaos (Perry had taken to claiming he was no longer Scratch but was instead to be addressed as Pipecock Jackson), and no further work was done on the master tapes. Perry sailed on into the rest of his undeniably unique life and Black Ark Studio quite literally went up in flames. Jobson, disappointed, moved on as well, working with other Jamaican producers on a handful of one-off singles before moving to Los Angeles, where he began a career as a respected and successful DJ. The tracks he had recorded with Perry, which were among the last to ever be cut at Black Ark, were never released and consequently assumed near mythic status among Perry collectors and fanatics.

Well, now here they are, thanks to Jobson and Pressure Sounds, some 30 years later, along with a handful of other tracks Jobson worked on during that same time period. What emerges from this story is a surprisingly consistent collection that shows Jobson was on to something way back then and that Perry, even though he was beginning a journey into a strange, self-imposed state of insanity, was still a remarkable wizard at the controls of his four-track Teac recording console. Seven of the 12 tracks here were engineered by Perry, including the almost industrial-sounding "In the Land of Make Believe" and "Meet Mr. Nobody," both of which display the signature watery dissonance of vintage late-era Black Ark tracks but with an added rock feel and a chaotic edge that seems to prefigure industrial grunge, albeit gone seriously askew into the world of Jamaican reggae. The Perry material is fascinating, but so too are the other tracks like the Jobson-produced gem "Great God Over in Zion," which features street singer Boston Jack, who wrote the song, and the striking "Black Tracks," which was produced by Jack Ruby at Channel One over a rhythm provided by the Black Disciples, Ruby's longtime house band. With several striking dub versions of these songs added in, Rockstone: Native's Adventures with Lee Perry at the Black Ark (the title, though cumbersome, perfectly fits the content here) emerges as somewhat of a great lost Jamaican album, and although one wishes Perry and Jobson could have officially finished the tracks they had begun working on back in 1977, what's collected here is more than fine and makes clear that, although Scratch's mental condition may have begun a rum and ganja-soaked dissolution, his skills at the mixing board remained undiminished even as Black Ark began sliding away under the waves.

Vin Gordon and the Upsetters - musical bones 1975

A collaboration between one of the og Skalights trombonists Vin Gordon (supposedly Perry's fave horn player) with the Upsetters, produced by the jamaican et himself at the peak of Black Ark's prowess.

basically this is horn jazz + dub, hard to miss with that combo

the 97 reissue (pic above) credits the whole thing to Perry only, but that's incorrect and probably done in hope of racking up sales based on name recognition
