the link to the aside is easy to find, i'll up it in a sec

the bside i can't find for shit though, and i like it just as much

he also did a podcast thing modeled after an old motown radio show, kinda like galvy's parody things but not funny. it's pretty good, he threw in some old commercials (props for using the radio spot for Trouble Man, which had a Marvin Gaye OST) and whatnot, and the music itself is banging

a-side, this is the song that got him signed and is getting all sorts of buzz now

http://www.stonesthrow.com/jukebox/maye ... staint.mp3

here's teh podcast, you need itunes to listen i think
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSt ... =128983846
Hawthorne Radio Tracklist
01 Berry Gordy Intro
02 Martha & The Vandellas - In My Lonely Room
03 Brenton Wood - I Think You've Got Your Fools Mixed Up
04 Bobby Bland - Hands Small But Mighty
05 The Marvelettes - You're The One For Me Bobby
06 The Steelers - Get It From The Bottom
07 Marvin Gaye - Stubborn Kind of Fellow
08 Brothers of Soul - I Guess That Don't Make Me A Loser
09 Belita Woods - Magic Corner
10 Dee Edwards - Why Can't There Be Love
11 The Escorts - By The Time I Get To Phoenix
12 The 21st Century - I Just Can't Forget Your Name
13 The Whatnauts - Trouble Making Fool
14 The Superlatives - I Don't Know How
15 Smokey Robinson and The Miracles - Baby Baby Don't Cry
16 Shirley Lawson - One More Chance
17 The Montclairs - Hey You!
18 The Precisions - If This Is Love

What i'm really diggin about this dude is that while there's def been a very strong funk revival going on for a while now, there hasn't been that much soul to match (that i can find at least, maybe i'm missing it). There are some singles on truth/soul and daptone and all those that fall into the category, but they're comparatively few. I want more shit like this and Charles Bradley's Telephone Song

every thread title outside of troy/m2c should be 'poorly mixed compilations of completely disposable self-canibalizing music' for full success

Speaking of Stones Throw: am I the only know who loved Koushik's album here?

I know a lot of people have been critical of Stones Throw's development lately but I really like how they've branched out over the last 2 years. Dam-Funk, James Pants and Mayer Hawthorne are all good signings.

a little update for you chillens

so hawthorne's myspace has a new track, called Maybe So Maybe No. It's pretty good. here's the myspace http://www.myspace.com/mayerhawthorne

so I started looking for the mp3, and came across the original of it by a group called the New Holidays, which shits so hard on Hawthorne's version it's unbelievable. I like Hawthorne's take on it, but this is just ruthlessly better

http://www.djferrari.com/music/NewHolidays.mp3

i gotta start listening to more doowop

i love this dude's record and how it looks:

Image

i am a little critical of the change from stones throw, much as i am a little lukewarm on warp's transition into almost an rock/pop label (tom vek, battles, jamie lidell, born ruffians)

still, as long as it's good music, i'm with it, no matter where it's from

What're some other things Stones Throw released not Madlib-related in the past couple years? I feel like I stopped paying attention to them soon after Madvillain (very dumbly, I know).

just looked it up and they've released projects from Omar Rodriguez-Lopez,
Koushik, James Pants, Heliocentrics, Dam-Funk, etc..

i know the koushik and heliocentrics albums are solid.. havent' heard the rest.

the Dam-Funk is good stuff sorta 80s boogie electro music

ST are one of the only indie internet age labels that have grasped the new music landscape and made something of it. Rap has kinda got boring as of late and they figured that out so hey diversify or die

i feel you, but actually they started seriously diversifying in 2000 when they dropped Breakestra and Madlib's Yesterdays New Quintet stuff. they've been doing only 50% hip hop for a while now. Good to see they havent stopped the rap shit though - that new Guilty Simpson is heat.

(James Pants is a dud though. sorry.)

really? I like some of the music, but the dude can't sing. He's actually out of tune at times on that album.
