i was doing some sabar drumming with my teacher and our ensemble. i even brought my latest love interest and she was picking up on the bass drum parts and the lead drum parts.
it struck me how much the style of call and response found in this sounds like hip hop, not only the beats of rap music but the actual way that black musicians rap and sing.
this stuff swings a lot
listening to soca today i could really hear the background in steel pan orchestras, but in soca i think a lot of the big band jazzy sound of old calypso is lost?
i really like the dialogue in good soca between the percussion: (iron section, the bass drum, often an indian tassa or the boom of a djembe or dounoun, and the congas or pitched african drums) and the way it goes back and forth and weaves in and out of the pulse of the guitars and the riffs of the keyboards/synthesizers
my mind is slowing down or speeding up and its like i can analyze beats differently now.. this stuff can really alter your perception. i think good dancers really get into an amazing ecstatic trance. its why good martial artists can kick ass, the other guy is moving so slowly to them, its like the matrix or something. the mind is awesome.
(soca has a steady beat of iron which is not congas, steel pan, drum set or afreican drums but something else, really just a instrument made of iron with a few different pitches struck rapidly... similar beats are banged out on jouvert morning on the infamous "bottle an spoon"... the equivalent in salsa is the clave, shekere and maraca combo along with tambourines and the other ratchety instruments that make the rapid background that the conga players and piano players and bass players groove on)

the mozambique rhtym
thsi is a cuban carnival rhtym descended form another cuban rhytm which is a cousin of brazillian samba, infact the rhythm mozambique is influenced by has been called cuban samba
in the 70s, african american conga players took mozambique and made the african maerican version which is still the prototypical conga rhtyhm that novice players will play in parks and on the streets, u can hear the watered down mozambique in marvin gay's "whats going on" and the groove of the song is built around it
