Totally fucking love it.

I can see getting tired of the ethereal interludes over time, but right now the whole thing is really working for me.

Seeing them Mon at Bell House. Maybe Wed at Death by Audio too.

NYers, you need to catch these guys.

It's pretty ill. Definitely a progression of their CTS classic rock/psyche progression, but with a lot of good shit in there. If anything, it's a little more rock n roll than CTS.

Also, much to my surprise, I really like Mike Elizondo's production. Much better than O'Brien to me.

Shit sounds really spacious and expansive, with each instrument really having a lot of space to move around, while still adding up to a big sound. Not overly clean or sterile, which isn't easy for something that sounds like it was recorded fairly meticulously.

Thanks for the link, I was gonna wait out until I got it in the mail but after a few listens I'm happy I pre-ordered it. I was kind of caught off guard at first but I'm really enjoying the album. It's all over the place in terms of how it sounds, and even though it varies I like it all. It's consistently inconsistent? I don't even know what the fuck I'm talking about anymore. It's a good album and I have a feeling I'll be listening to it a lot in the months to come. It's been a while since I sat through a entire album without skipping a few tracks, even Curl Of The Burl which I've grown to appreciate as well.

need to catch up on the mastodon and wolves. Did see WITTR in Brooklyn at Death By Audio, which is a butthole of a club, but they were amazing, the 3/4 of the show I was able to take in through the smoke and hipster sweat.

I don't get the appeal of Thou at all, thought they were terrible.

On the prog spectrum, I have been enjoying the new Textures and Arch/Matheos albums.

Gonna give some time to the new Mastodon tomorrow (aka today when I wake up) I think. Never really enjoyed their records as much when not digested whole for a first listen.

same here with Thou. Its the metal band equivalent of blog hype. bunch of hipster/vegan kids trying to be badasses and failing miserably set to mediocre post sludge with shitty BM vocals.

heard a few of the Mastodon tracks hanging out around Bill K's van after the Despise You/Magrudergrind/Primate show in Atlanta last weekend. Ill get around to checking out the album eventually.

speaking of which. That was my favorite show (minus CIT fest in Austin this summer) Ive been to all year. Ive waited 16 years to finally see Despise You live and they fucking killed it. They have been my other favorite band for years alongside Eyehategod and Spazz (whose bass player and Slap A Ham Records founder Chris Dodge is now the DY bass player). The energy was in abundance and the atmosphere of violence had you watching out of the corners of your eyes (at the band, the crowd were pussies). Ive been writing letters to the singer since the 90s and used to frequently mailorder from his old label Pessimiser so he knows Im a superfan. I kept my spot up front and was raging. They introduce me to the crowd and hand me the mic to do lead vocals on "Roll Call" and I nailed it. Nothing beats being handed the mic and feeling like for 30 seconds your in the band. It was awesome. Im still psyched about it.

Magrudergrind destroyed as per usual. Really great live. Primate was a great suprise even though its weird to see Kevin Sharp outisde of Brutal Truth and Bill outside of Mastodon. Sucks if you missed this tour because it was the first and only time DY toured the East Coast.

Im taking a break from shows for awhile and waiting for my bands cassette release. Ill post a link to the record when we get copies back if anyone wants to give it a spin. Were doing a joint album release/return home from tour show with Rwake in Little Rock October 22nd. We decided not to waste money on cd and try to make it a collectors deal with a shirt combo and include free link to download. Were not rich enough to release a new vinyl every week like Thou.

people have been saying good things, actually older people who grew up on them, I've yet to check it out.

really enjoying the new Mastodon. I'm just glad that they are able to write killer songs still, even if it doesn't sound like the old shit. Many metal bands who try to write something more accessible or melodic usually fail pretty horribly because they are forcing it. Seems like it comes pretty naturally to Mastodon. I actually like the songs that sound nothing like Mastodon the most. Blasteroids, Creature Lives, stuff like that. If you look at a song like Spectrelight, it's in the old style and cool, but objectively, it wouldn't make the cut on Leviathan.

After a couple of listens I don't mind the new Mastodon, but I'd rather just listen to Remission and Leviathan.
