adriandenning.co.uk wrote:Ok, so ambient wasn't invented by the Aphex Twin. But ambient is only the half of it, anyway. A certain something is happening here. Ambient is a stripping away of everything to leave the bare essentials, often a single melody line with 'atmospheric' new age sound effects over the top. That isn't at all what is happening here. Lets take opener "Xtal" as an example. Little electronic shuffling cymbal sounds, a melody line, a soft bass beat - sampled heavenly female 'da da, do da' ethereal vocal sounds. The main melody line continues, a second appears underneath. In effect you get two ambient songs layered over the top of one another. Other melody lines appear. Second song "Tha" stretches a single beat and rhythm over nine minutes and layers variations over that beat. "Pulsewidth" sounds truly otherworldly, a sound that could only have been achieved by the Aphex Twin. Why? He build all of his own instrumentation. There is little technological or 'cold' sound here as a result. "Pulsewidth" in particular sounds very human, very analogue, and not at all 'digital'.

I won't go through all of the pieces on this album. They are in places difficult to grasp and pin down, difficult to hold onto if always beautiful. There is a sense of the music shifting and changing, floating off altogether. We do get "Green Calx" with a mess of electronic noises over a strong melody line and the beautiful one minute long "i" which points the way towards this records follow-up set. Every single piece here is melody based rather than based just upon its feel or atmosphere. Yeah, this is ambient music, I mean, it can't easily be classified as anything else. But, as I've said, there is much else going on here. A startling entry in the mind and music of Richard D James as well as a highly recommended work in its own right.

arguably the greatest bossa nova album ever. happens to be the OG in terms of making the sound widely commercially viable in the US (meaning enough white people could like it and buy it for record companies to put money into it) guitar and composition by Jobim, piano by this murderous dude whom i forget (drums too), singing by the Gilbertos (the parents of astrud), saxophone by stan getz.

Wikipedia wrote:Bonobo uses a wide variety of samples in his music combined with heavy, often complex basslines. His music generally develops linearly - with new elements such as basslines or percussion coming in one after the other. In Days to Come, he mixes this sonic background with the clean yet distinctive vocals of Bajka, who often uses harmony to build up a multifaceted sound.

Whilst often touring solo, and performing DJ sets, in 2004 Bonobo opted to follow the growing trend amongst electronic acts of playing with a full band. The band plays live renditions of studio material, with a singer, keyboardist, guitarist, saxophonist, string section, Electronics, and drummer. Simon Green mainly plays bass guitar, and leads the band from the middle.
it's like dj shadowey stuff with female vocals and live drums and instruments.

got more of a funky, electronic type of arranging/instrumentation. electric guitar, keyboard instrumentation, etc. but doesnt sound like shit. this is the album with the heralded Inside My Love song featured in the movie Jackie Brown but this one is the full version (the one on the soundtrack is a minute or two short). a very chill album indeed

Nightmares On Wax-Smokers Delight

All Music Guide wrote:George Evelyn's solo step as Nightmares on Wax, Smokers Delight, is a whole delightfully irreducible to its parts, which, as with earlier releases, is largely electro, hip-hop, and soul, with bits of Latin percussion and down-tempo funk thrown in.

theres this sort of criterion collection of composers/musicians called the Maestro Collection or something. they did one of Ravi Shankar, sweetest indian musician ever. in this collection he is on sitar and plays a couple ragas and a mishra. thats like saying he played a symphony and a noctourne. the important thing is that A) shit sounds cool B) the idea of the music is to bring you to a perfect place of peace

This is another classic. Hard to believe this is 13 years old, it still holds up so well. This was the pioneering 'trip-hop' album that helped put Ninja Tune on the map, a heady mixture of downtempo breaks, dark dubby atmospherics, eerie ambience and deep, deep basslines. The range of this album still surprises me, moving from chilled out jazz breaks through to much darker acid dub and even to the proto jungle of 'King Ashabanpal (Part 2.)' All infused with hilarious and perfectly placed porn vocal samples. This album can easily be put on in the background but actually focusing on it drags you into a journey through a groove laden dream scape that is incredibly rewarding and scarily hypnotic. This album is best listened to reclined and preferably baked.
