What albums are you listening to?

So i was thinking that this could be the Rick Rubin verison of the movie thread in Curb. Hopefully this will be a place where people can learn about stuff they havent heard before or revisit albums they havent heard in awhile. Anyway ill start.

The Mars Volta- De-loused in the Commatorium: To be honest I always thought these guys sounded like pussies and that i'd never be able to get into their stuff but i guess i was wrong i am really loving this album. They have some really dense and funky songs on this album and i actually am enjoying it.

Arcade Fire- Funeral: I listened to Neon Bible and decided that these guys sucked i was wrong again. Everyone told me to give this album a shot and I am glad i did because its quickly becoming an all-time favorite for me.

Soil and Pimp Sessions- 6: Another album of fast, energetic jazz from possibly the best unknown band today. These guys deserve way more shine then they get; unbelievable band.

I have a bunch more I am currently listening to but I'd like to hear from some other people.

To date all albums by Soil & "Pimp" Sessions have featured the word 'pimp' in their titles, but for their sixth full album release, the six-piece death jazz specialists who first performed in Roppongi (which literally translated means 'six trees') settled on the title 6.

It's seemed like a long wait since last year's superb Planet Pimp, and in that time the band have spent a lot of time further cementing their reputation as one of the world's most exciting live acts by playing dates in a number of European countries as well as continued appearances here in Japan. Now after having listened to the new album about half a dozen times or so, I'm ready to write my review.

The first thing that strikes you about the album is that this is the first time the band have collaborated with other artists on one of their own album releases. Three of the thirteen tracks involve a collaboration of one kind or another with some well-known guests as the band try to push their sound forward.

The first collaboration comes on the opening track Seven, billed as an 'Intro sound collage' by DJ Kentaro, which is a cut, paste and remix job done on some freestyling by the band with comments by Shacho. It's just done just right so that the DJ effects complement rather than interfere with the music and the whole thing serves as a great intro track. Keizoku is one of the short, high octane, aggressive tunes that you come to expect from the band that will always go do well live. No sooner is this over than they launch into a cover of Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag. According to the liner notes written by drummer Midorin, Gilles Peterson suggested they have a stab at this track and to be honest, I'm not totally surprised. When I first heard Pimpin' back in 2004, I was instantly reminded of the adrenaline rush I felt on hearing Pigbag for the first time, only more so. The notes go on to mention that the band experimented with a number of different arrangements before going with sax player Motoharu's arrangement, which takes the original, speeds it up a bit and adds a lot of ad libbing in the mid-section. The result is one of those rare occasions where a band covers a song and actually makes it their own. The original is a classic, but this version takes the tune to a whole new level.

Things slow down slightly next for My Foolish Heart ~ crazy in mind~ a mid-tempo track with a superb melody that begs repeated listens. A different arrangement of the tune (My Foolish Heart ~ crazy on earth) appears later on the album with guest vocals from Shiina Ringo, a vocalist the band have previously collaborated with on an iTunes (Japan) only track a couple of years ago.

The honour of song number six on album number six goes to Pop Korn, an infectiously catchy tune which has a kind of sixties soul-jazz vibe to it, which is easy to dance, clap or 'na-na-na-na' along to ~ in fact it's probably harder not to do anything. Quartz and Chronometer is another great tune to dance to, and the trio of catchy dance tunes in the middle of the album is topped off by Paraiso, track recorded late last year as the them tune to the TV anime Mitchan and Hatchan.

The third collaboration on the album is with singer Jamie Callum, born out of the Electric Proms performances in the UK and some dates in Japan last year. Together they offer their take on the classic track Stolen Moments, and as with Jose James' collaboration with J.A.M, the musicians show a good mutual understanding to deliver a fine performance.

The album closes with 殺戮と平和 (which roughly translates as 'Slaughter and Peace'), a track which offers yet another tune built around ubiquitous 'satsuriku' riff, which will no doubt be used at the climax to dates on their autumn tour.

It might have been a slightly longer than usual wait for the new album to appear, but 6 is yet another very solid album that will delight existing fans and may be a good starting place for anyone who has yet to invest in one of their albums. Superb stuff.

it ranges from straight ahead blues-rock, to hard psych to really really dark folk, it's kinda hard to nail down. but thematically everything revolves around biker life more or less.

what did you think it was gonna be?

I was kind of imagining the trippier elements of Monster Magnet. Not for any real reason, just what jumped into my head when I read your description.

Born in 1970, in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Allan Crichton aka White Mice is a graduate of three sound systems -- Sugar Minott's Youthman Promotion, Jammy's Hi Power, and his hometown Ticka Muzik. His first break came at the Sunsplash festival in 1985, when he and Little Kirk were called on stage to perform with Tenor Saw. Recording at King Jammy's and Channel One studios, with Junior Delgado at the controls, over the next few years Mice let off a series of records amongst the very deadliest of digital reggae -- nearly all on his brother Blemo's Intelitec imprint, out of Miami. This release collects cuts from White Mice's 1988 Intelitec album True Love as well as other never before reissued digital reggae classics.

^^ yeah that's a good one, forgot who put me on to it originally but it was somebody from here

a lot of times with reggae i prefer the dub version to the vocal, but it's completely the opposite here

Never listened to that Arcade Fire album, anyone else got opinions on it? The people that liked it at the time it came out were pissing me off so I pretty much avoided it.

skurdur the mp3x god

and binary i'd definitely suggest giving it a listen and forming your own opinion. don't get put off by the fans, it's legit. imo at least. I recommend listening to the tracks "wake up" and "neighborhood #1". you should be able to find it easily on google.

Word to Deloused, one of my favorites from this decade. That album really pushes your shit in at some points, love it.

Here is my current rotation:

Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga & Transference: Last Spoon album I seriously listened to was Gimme Fiction some years ago, lost the last two in the shuffle somehow. I immediately liked/borderline love the first. Transference is slowly growing on me. "Who Makes Your Money" and "Written in Reverse" are dope as hell though.

Washed Out - Life of Leisure EP: This shit is crazy to me. Makes you want to nod your head and sway at the same fucking time. This dude needs more music out there, immediately.

Digging that White Mice album too.

Broken Bells- Broken Bells: Danger Mouse and James Mercer from The Shins working together and I've got to say that I really like it. If you liked DM's work with Gorillaz you will probably like this album too.

Rodrigo y Gabriela- 11:11: Another brilliant album of rhythmic, fast acoustic guitar for these two. I find myself listening to this while driving all the time and im not quite sure why.

co-signed on Transference. I really feel so far like its my least favorite Spoon album but you are right about it growing on you. also "Who Makes Your Money" and "Written in Reverse" are my two favorites so far.

I saw Wild Combination the other week, and have had Arthur Russell's 'World Of Echo' pretty much on repeat ever since.

Went to see a London band called Comanechi just before Xmas and copped their new album - 'Crime of Love'. Have been following them for a few years now - great live show, enjoyable album. Two piece punk band in the vein of Huggy Bear.

Image
Codeine 'Frigid Stars'. Bit of a staple.

Image
New Four Tet - so good.

Image
Honestly, I prefer his newer (Jesu) stuff, but talk of this getting reissued has got me listening again.

Image
Some London 'ip 'op. Skinnyman.

Image
Roof Light 'In Your Hands'. And various other dubstep 12s/EPs/mixes.

It's doesn't really translate fully on the albums, but live it's pretty nuts. A slew of crazy japs with wild haircuts, dressed like pimps, playing high speed loud jazzy tunes and rocking out all over the stage.
