I missed the random song of the day thread. I should def be banned from 2 am to 7 am. This is LLB. I guess I'll change this to a Janelle Monae thread because her new album is incredible. Dare I say favorite album of the year?

Maybe I just I suck at hyping, but her CD has been in consistent rotation in my car since it came out.. Other than Arcade Fire's new album, there hasn't been much this year deserving of that honor.

i tried to get into her music, even before all the hype. i tried to get into her music after all the hype can popular co-signs. she has a really beautiful face but that's the only positive thing i can say. she is like the child of andre 3000 and badu that gets raped by hendrix and then has an affair with lady gaga.

I like her music a lot, but I don't actually think her music is as good as people will have you believe, if that makes sense. I like how she takes her own shtick to absurd but not annoying lengths. Her nerdiness is endearing to me for obvious reasons and she kind of looks like if Rudy Huxtable grew up trying to emulate Denise and doing acid. Also, she makes the kind of music that MIA aspires to but fails from a serious lack of talent, all the while singing in key.

But yeah, this is music for the now, not anything that will be admired decades in the future or anything. It's like a gateway drug for getting hawt chix into early Outkast. She should go to the prom with Mike Eagle or something.

This is one of the best albums this year. Girl has a good voice and seems kind of crazy in all the right ways. She'll be around for a while.

I understand why people dig her, but 80% of her album bored the shit out of me. Anything she's doing, some other contemporary artist has probably done better or more creatively. I haven't checked the upload in this thread just yet, so maybe that'll change my opinion.

I think I had all the songs, but wasn't sure what order they were supposed to be in, or if The Chase really belongs on the album. I tried google, but can't find any production credits or track list anywhere. I'm surprised this album got shelved.

Basically the story behind it is it was recorded at her friend's studio in Atlanta. It was only sold by her out of a boarding house she was living at. She'd go around to local college campuses and do open mic nights and shit like that. Apparently she sold several thousand just by hand. After that she started her own label (Wondaland Arts Society) and started working on the EP.
