so i like this alot
the album in general is so cleanly poppy and catchy i have a hard time imagining anybody straight up hating it
i agree with timlaska re: teh album's impact being diluted by half of it leaking early, but the new songs are worthy additions that stand up well with the leaked ones. it's not like the new ones are significantly worse.
the only 'critical' beef i can really raise is that it sounds more like a collection of random singles than a cohesive album. BUT, I think the music they're taking ques from wasn't meant for the album format either, the roots of it came before the LP firmly took hold. I'm pretty sure a lot of the albums released by Spectors girl groups were actually just collections of previously released 45s with maybe a few new ones added in. So this albums loose quality is kinda fitting

I dont think they are worse either, they just dont carry the impact of the six that leaked, in the order those six songs landed on my ipod, each song was better than the previous. so when you get 5 songs that dont hit as much as any of those it is kind of a bummer.drizzle wrote:i agree with timlaska re: teh album's impact being diluted by half of it leaking early, but the new songs are worthy additions that stand up well with the leaked ones. it's not like the new ones are significantly worse.

you should though, often when you go in with high expectations that aren't met the second visit with lowered expectations goes better. that's how i am with movies anyway

you should go into it after listening to someting completely opposite. like death metal > cults.
that's another lesson gleaned from too much dvd watching > some gory bloodsplattered actioner hits so much harder when you watch it right after some pixar jawnt, and vice versa

i still like the album lots but this soudns like a terrible idea
i'd maybe be more into it if let's say they were producing original material with rappers on vocals, or contributing instrumentation along similar lines or something like that. but this sounds like some quick cash in where freddie gibbs will phone in a verse over a half hearted statik selektah chop of go outside, and nobody needs to hear that shit.

I agree that Rave On is a good closer. I'm just glad they tried something like that instead of closing with another jangly pop song.
Never saw the point is my favorite of theirs. Not sure if it's because I played the 'leaked' stuff so much or what, but it's a great tune.
They're coming back to a tiny venue during Lolla, I'm sure tickets will sell out immediately then go up on craigslist for 10x face. So if anybody wants to see Cults for 250 dollars, PM me.
