Great songs by otherwise reprehensible artists

Post by Career Over Like Mike(NJJ) »

Self explanatory :

U2 - Desire

The trick here is you've just gotta pretend it's some 80s Van Morrison song and never watch the video so you don't have to subject yourself to Bono when he thought he was a cast member of Young Guns.

Limp Bizkit - Break Stuff

The only true heir to Institutionalized by Suicidal Tendencies.

Suede - We Are The Pigs

So good, even Brett Anderson's atrocious lyrics and the usually unwelcome presence of a saxophone on a rock song couldn't spoil it.

Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl

The only genre most deplorable than British Hip Hop is American Ska; the Neptunes somehow managed to vindicate one of the latter genre's worst offenders.

The Eagles - Those Shoes

So much more than just "that Eagles song the Beasies and Eric B & Rakim sampled!"

Fall Out Boy - Dance Dance

If this song was by some band featuring ex-members of Goriila Biscuits and Quicksand, it'd be acknowledged as the masterpiece it truly is.

Sheryl Crow - All I Wanna Do

This >>>>>> the entire career of Patti Smith, Bruce Springsteen and those Fiona Apple albums all y'all sweat.

Might as well knock out two with one blow

I definitely feel deep shame about that one though...

Also, U2's "with or without you" still has a place in my deep deep inner 10 year old emo kid heart.

this ain't a scene man it's a goddamn arms race was actually my first thought. was around the radio all the time when that dropped and was generally pretty happy to hear it when it would come on. dance, dance never hit me like that one, must not have featured quite as many audible aerial horizontal spins while holding guitars

Eddie Money

Take Me Home Tonight
I Wanna Go Back
Walk On Water

dude is a glorified lounge lizard but he made a few catchy tunes.

Britney's "toxic" has always been her tour de force , as far as I'm concerned.
Also, lol at there now being three sheryl crow songs in this thread.

Jamiroqui - King For A Day

Always hated them; that whole Acid Jazz meets Stevie Wonder thing when they started getting popular, Jay Kay's douchebaggery, music for Camden Town middle classes wanting to be weekend crusties and the blatant Jools Holland backslapping. Jay Kay tries to ruin it towards the end but it's not enough to completely destroy their one only good song, thankfully.

Sugababes - Run For Cover

Just before the ginger one disappeared into the fashion industry abyss and they became their own tribute band in the following years. This is what I would imagine Mobb Deep's Havoc shutting up shop and becoming a girl band producer would sound like.

Justin Timberlake - Cry Me A River

Full on hater mode. Never liked him. Only song he's ever done I would genuinely class as great.

Werd to Run For Cover. Don't front on Overload either, though, bruv :

Ayo Malpractice AKA Mallgoth Spice - STFU! Toxic and Slave 4 U are Britney's artistic pinnacles, and Desire bodies any of U2's early stuff when they were little more than a paddy PiL tribure act.

Linkin Park - Breaking The Habit

Linkin Park would've been the new Depeche Mode if they hadn't had Mike Shinoda's stilted rapping featuring on 99% of their material. This is the peerless 1% where he's thankfully absent.

This right here took me back. And I forgot how many people were co-signing these dudes when they were at their commercial peak.

I also wholeheartedly agree w/Block about Britney/Toxic.

The Black Eyed Peas (Mach II w/Fergie)'s "Dont Phunk With My Heart" and "Imma Be" come to mind as well.

Britney has a great discography. Blackout was arguably one of the most important sounding albums of the last decade. FOB was a good band too...especially their last album.
------

STP "Sour Girl"

Filter "Take My Picture"

Pavement "Cut Your Hair"

Rhianna & Chris Brown "Nobody's Business"
The idea of this song is reprehensible and both artists are terrible, but The-Dream wrote an amazing MJ Bad era pop song for them.

Omarion "Ice Box"

I'm sorry I can't ride for any of the post MTV Limp Bizkit songs, especially Break Stuff. Their first album, which still is pretty much the only thing of its kind, still holds up though.
Filter's Take My Picture is one of the worst songs ever. Their first album is pretty decent industrial rock though and I still enjoy their mashup of Crystal Method's Trip Like I Do a good bit.

Always thought this was a great cover

this one reprehensible for completely different reasons, pretty sure the lead singer was just arrested for raping babies or something

always hated this cunt but even I can't deny this song

that fear factory cover is pretty dope. im pretty sure i bought that album just for that track.

bunz, i agree about the first limp bizkit album. i dig this song:

i actually saw them open for faith no more in 1997 before they broke and no one (including me) knew who they were. fred durst had long hair. the whole thing was weird.

anyway,

im ashamed to admit that i like this song, especially the chorus.

gay emo kids, but they clearly listen to a lot of queen and floyd, which somehow makes this turn out to be an immense slab of high quality powerpop in the end.

U2 has a lot of dope early shit. I don't think I can back anything else in this thread though lol. Speaking of early good stuff - 311's first 2 albums own. FUIFUDISAGRE.

tommy's list is essentially made up of crap songs that we hold dear because they are associated with chilhood, smoking weed for the first time or getting a hand job in your mom's oldsmobile.

I will rock out to Hey Jealousy by the Gin Blossoms alone and drunk, but let's not pretend any of those songs are actually that good. Especially that Cumbersome jawn, which essentially marks the birth of Creed/Nickleback dude rock.

I really can't even argue with that (although I think Santa Monica and Doll Parts are actually great songs).
This is probably a better 90's example of what was intended for the thread.

I worked in a pool hall with a jukebox while in high school and can therefore never listen to sublime again.
