Covers Poll #1: Bob Dylan

Post by Roy Johnson »

These polls will be limited to five or six songs. I'll post what I consider to be the best versions, whether unreleased or official.

First up is Bob Dylan. I tried to avoid some of the more obvious tracks, like "All Along The Watchtower" and "Mr. Tambourine Man". I could have gone with any number of Byrds covers, but the live version of "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" is a personal favorite of mine. Also, my original intent was to list Van Morrison's live 1974 cover of "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" (backed by the Caledonia Soul Orchestra), but I ended up going with the 1966 studio version.

Bob Dylan - Girl From The North Country (1963 Demo)

Pete Townshend - Girl From The North Country (London 4-14-74)

Bob Dylan - It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (London 5-10-65)

Van Morrison & Them - It's All Over Now, Baby Blue

Bob Dylan - Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window (Outtake)

Jimi Hendrix - Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window (BBC 1967)

Bob Dylan - You Ain't Goin' Nowhere (Basement Tapes 1967)

The Byrds - You Ain't Goin' Nowhere (Los Angeles 9-28-68)

Bob Dylan - If Not For You

George Harrison - If Not For You

Bob Dylan is my favorite musician of all time, but I never liked his version. The Harrison one is a classic, though.

There's an unreleased version of that song with Dylan singing & Harrison playing guitar (recorded in late 69/early 70). It's interesting, albeit unessential.

Tell me about it. The LP version is forgettable, but the live renditions from the late 60s are awesome. The one listed in the poll was performed at the Playboy Mansion, for a show called "Playboy After Dark". I had to edit out the first 90 seconds because Hugh Hefner was interviewing McGuinn.

The quality of this video source (if adjusted to 360) is vastly superior to what I have on bootleg. I need to convert it to mp3.

The second track (This Wheel's On Fire) was also incredible when performed live & forgettable in the studio.

The Townshend one got my vote as well. There are three more excellent covers that he did during the London 4-14-74 show:

If I Were A Carpenter

Amoreuse

No Face, No Name And No Number

I'll eventually do a Townshend poll. This English Beat cover will take it for me pretty easily:

Save It For Later (London 2-11-85)

I think the next one is gonna be Nirvana. Probably these 10:

The Man Who Fell To Earth
Where Did You Sleep Last Night?
Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam
Lake Of Fire
Plateau
Oh, Me
Son Of A Gun
Molly's Lips
D-7
Here She Comes Now

So I'm already breaking my own rules, because I won't be able to limit it to just 5 or 6. If there was a proper album of Nirvana covers, it would be a front-to-back masterpiece.
