Rick Rubin - Midyear Check-In

Post by Tommy Bunz »

What's everyone been feeling so far?

Love:
Eagulls - Eagulls
Lykke Li - I Never Learn
Crosses - Crosses
Mø - No Mythologies to Follow
Heliotropes - A Constant Sea

Like:
Phantogram - Voices
Wye Oak - Shriek
Beck - Morning Phase
Pharrell - Girl
Washed Out - Paracosm

Probably forgetting some too. Haven't listened to the new Lana Del Rey yet, but I'm expecting that to fall under the love list.

ha, was just thinking a bit ago while driving around listening to MØ and attempting to figure whether or not it's topping lydia loveless as #1 of the year thus far for me or not (deep driving dynamic thoughts), about making this thread tonight to see what everyone else was on
will type a post up a lil later on. could do it real quick but was gonna throw some youtubes in so

lovelove
MØ -- No Mythologies To Follow

Lydia Loveless -- Somewhere Else

CEO -- Wonderland

to a lower degree
Wye Oak -- Shriek

Drive-By Truckers -- English Oceans
shit, wanted to post primer coat, but the album versions not on youtube (cool live version w peter buck here tho).

need to listen to more of
Sylvan Esso -- Sylvan Esso (coffe's like whoa, need to do more of the rest)
EMA -- The Future's Void (so blonde's like whoa, need to do more of the rest. not real big on 3Jane or Cthulu which other people seem to nut over)
First Aid Kit -- Stay Gold (just dropped, first listen was dope)
Gruff Rhys -- American Interior (pert cool, probably not a ton of replay value)

need to listen to
beck
damon albarn/conor oberst maybe, mostly out of nostalgia tho doubt either would be list worthy
marissa nadler
phish due to a lesser degree of nostalgia though also doubt there's much to be made of that

song of the first six months

kind of shitty you can't still resize youtubes, feel obnoxious posting that many. & probably missed something, figured there was more but typed up while re watching the penultimate fargo so did the best one could expect

I've enjoyed these the most out of everything I've listened to this year.

Nothing- Guilty of Everything
St. Vincent- St. Vincent
Cloud Nothings- Here and Nowhere Else
Eagulls- Eagulls
Swans- To Be Kind
Chromeo- White Women
Parquet Courts- Sunbathing Animal
Fucked Up- Glass Boys
Priests- Bodies and Control and Money and Power
White Lung- Deep Fantasy
WIFE- What's Between
Mastodon- Once More 'Round the Sun
A Sunny Day In Glasgow- Sea When Absent (just got to this yesterday but I haven't been able to stop listening)

That Robyn mini album, The War on Drugs, and Beck were cool too but I haven't really listened to them much.

Yeah I've been a fan since playing the shit out of Pilgrim last year, even put it on my year end mix.
Have you checked out the new Lykke Li yet? Shit is a great breakup record, i'm hella gay for Love Me Like I'm Not Made of Stone.

I honestly think that there is way way too much shit. And when I sit down to download a new album or a few new albums... 'fuck this shit' is my first thought...

With that said.. The new Tame Impala Live Versions kills it. After all, this is the season for getting baked and just staring at shit with background music.

I wish I could say I had more favorites, but Sun Kil Moon and Mac Demarco have been it for me. I like the albums from the Orwells, the Owls, Bearhands, and Angel Olsen as well, but didn't really listen to a ton of any of them other than Sun Kil and Mac. I guess Sisyphus could fit in here too, doesn't really have a genre, but it's one of my favorite albums of the year.

Will check some these. Thanks guys.

The Jungle album has been getting quite a lot of play at our house. Bit like TV On The Radio.

My only gripe is that two of the songs are 10 minutes long, other than that it's pretty good.

Checked out Cherub's live show at Osheaga based on Blasty saying they ruled.
I can confirm that they rule a dance party and I now own the album.
Buy my mixtape.

Anyone been able to peep the new Ty Segall album Manipulator? It doesn't come out till later this month, but it's pretty fucking awesome. I've been a fan for a couple years and haven't listened to the new one more than a couple times, but I can confidently say it's his best album. PM me if you're interested.
