Talent wise? I would have to think it's unanimously Prince.

Let the cretans chime in please Gloss...

Got into a heated argument at the bar... I guess I just assumed people actually maybe thought otherwise

I think it could just be a nostalgia thing for some people, maybe some dancers that feel he was innovative but Prince is one of the greatest guitarists of all time... Can not believe anybody would argue this point... was very strange to me... (guy I was arguing with was black) again maybe a nostalgia thing

If anybody feels Michael Jackson was more talented please don't feel stupid in saying so, I just want to see somebody make a case for it because I like Gloss thought this was basically unanimous... and then random guy at the bar entered the room

MJ might have a more celebrated or had a more successful catalog and he certainly was a bigger star with a much longer career, but talent wise, he doesn’t even touch Prince.

Michael wrote many of the best pop songs ever.
had the bigger hit albums and songs. but did not have the prolific productivity of prince in terms of sheer output of un/released music. prince was working with some great musicians but Michael was too and Michael was partnered with quincy Jones who had an insane pop run that ended with the Janet album. prince is an amazing musician and can play instruments etc but the fact is Michael had the monster smash hits that changed the world and musical landscape over and over. a lot of musicians will tell you the biggest most elusive talent in the industry is making stuff that people like again and again and for long periods time. prince has dope music but let's face it A LOT of people have no idea about prince outside of a few hits and some music lovers who were aged right in the 80s whereas everyone on the planet knows who Michael is and what that music is. the later stuff is often forgotten for Michael but he was making monster hits well into the 90s.

If you are trying to tell me that princes shit would've been as big as Michael with the marketing I just disagree and part of the reason why Michael's shit is so dope is because like say the thriller concept he's combining all these elements like true cinematic pop. the song on the album includes Vincent price voice over etc yet doesn't sound like a waste or misuse of space on the album.

all I'm trying to say is don't underestimate the talent level of someone who not only taps into the fucking world market but also does that in a way to change and capture the hearts and minds of literally like everyone born since then. I'd like to call those talents vision and architecture.

people hear Michael's music for the first time now they get blown away. the shit has incredible staying power. you play someone some prince music they've never heard often times they're like ehh... Yeah that's cool... and people have their favorite underrepresented prince songs but that's part of the point you've almost never heard of an underrepresented mj song and they just feel underrepresented because they're fighting with 50 other mj songs that have literally sparked social movements the world over

but who's music speaks to me more right now? prince

pure talent... Michael will always be the one with more commercial appeal... but we are talking on a God given talent level... I guess it comes down to dancing vs guitar

I think I agree with you, but at the same time I fear the type of artists future generations will be praising... I don't mean that to slight Michael, but the public isn't always the right side to ride... but I definitely love your take and think you're the only person that broke it down to me in a way that I can sit and think you might be right... no I don't think he's as talented musically just because I will always put Prince's superior guitar playing against all coming from a family of guitarists, but I can see where some may feel Michael had a special gift... almost an intangible quality... interesting

Lol the thing that separates all competition here is that Prince was a fucking GOD on the guitar... that is a type of talent that for me at least, is so much more than any rapper or dancer could ever muster... and is that where I'm wrong? I mean I love Bruce Dickerson but ultimately isn't there more to be said for the guitarist? Let alone the guitar/vocalist? on the craziest stage... one manning it (pause)... Prince = God ... MJ = Jay

princes guitar work is outstanding.
amazing songwriter. great singer. one of the few/only people/musicians miles Davis respected which just says that maybe one of the biggest pricks ever respected prince as an equal

Prince played over 15 instruments at a virtuoso level... I love MJ, but let's be real. Also, Quincy was responsible for writing a bunch of Mike's hits.

heal the world written by Michael recorded 1989 released 1992
who is it recorded 1990 released 1992 1 cowriter
jam recorded 1991 released 1992 4 cowriters incl teddy riley

the point is Michael been writing his own shit. sure it's probably a more collaborative process in some ways than prince but the process seems totally different for Michael and should that really be the crux of greatness?

consider thriller
The girl is mine written by Michael coproduced by Michael and quincy
Billie Jean same
beat it same
wanna be starting something same
human nature written by two others produced by quincy
pyt Michael did the demo quincy and another finalized it produced by quincy
thriller written by rod temperton produced by quincy but iirc in a interview temperton said that Michael already had the broad strokes in place for thriller and had a vision for what he was trying to accomplish when temperton showed up at the studio to compose

MJ for sure. Prince got a million songs; About 3 of them are listenable in 2017.

step one, I say Prince = Kanye, not Nas.
Highly innovative and prolific during his time, but also antisocial and ultimately overrated. Is remembered more for his persona than the actual music.

not sure I can agree with that. while it takes incredible dedication and work to become a virtuoso on the guitar, there is equal amount of work put in to, say dancing for example. While choreography is made to fit POP, freestyle dance is self expression along the lines of jazz. I think dancing has been around longer than string instruments too so,

Prince probably can express himself more deeply than MJ, but MJ's power (nicely stated above) was his ability to communicate his talent on a global scale not just in music, but in everything he did...pedo stuff aside...

did they ever work together?
