what rock groups make the best attempts @ hip hop ?

Post by CRASH DDZ »

Rock-Rap.. as a whole.. I hate it. The concept.. and most of the product...

Roots and the Beasties, aside (they were punk first..rap later obviously..) I never cared much for bands that rap....

gym class Heroes have several great tracks.. blood hound gang is good for a great number of laughs (both with and at) Dee Dee Ramons's Dee Dee King side project was dooty back in the day...

I always like Urban Dance Squad.

The Goats had some good joints..

The best I think I've heard would be weerd science.. Which is the drummer from avenged sevenfold's side project with an M.C. named weerd science. They debut they released is very dope to me.. very very dope.

Most of the reason I couldn't get into the Red hot Chili peppers for years was the fact that Anthony Keedis seemed like he wanted to rap rather than sing.. I've always hated his psuedo m.c. riffs.. just never cut it for me.. same with Faith No More. Sorry, I know there are some fans on here but I have always hated that band... I grew to like the chili Peppers eventually despite hating the rap attempts.. I think it was that "sweet kentucky girl ina push-up bra" line that got me to give in to liking that crew...

I guess the good guys would be:
weerd science
atmosphere (lately, live anywy)
Gym Class Heroes
Urban Dance Squad

and who else did the rock-rap justice ? Anthrax only made I'm the man and a Public Enemy cover right ? we'll call that a decent showing.. o.k ?

yeah, i mean in terms of record sales Linkin Park is the best band from the "nu-metal" scene still doing it. theyre doing something right and i like their sound a lot too.

i cant really think of any other bands that would fit that havent already been mentioned.

Ratm
Blondie
90's rock band Beastie Boys (if they count)
N.E.R.D (no rapping really)

yeah that's about it.

incubus' first couple albums are actually very hip hop influenced. but lately they've showed alot of homosexual tendencies.

Beck can rap his ass off ("Hotwax" being a prime example).

And I'd nominate Pavement, if only for "Blue Hawaiin." Malkmus' lyrics > almost all of your favorite rappers.

Soul Coughing ?

I consider them hip hop and d-n-b inspired before Mike Doughty went solo..

He still uses hip-ish slang now and then too..

CrazyTown..yeah that was the butterfly sonh I was talking about hating.

anyone remember the KRS/R.E.M. collabo ?

i like soul coughing, but i don't know if I would consider that straight rock really, it's some kind of weird rock/funk fusion. The propellerheads remixed one of their songs, it was pretty fucking great

does Cake count? that dude kinda raps the lyrics

"Rapture" is better than any song by almost all of the other artists listed in this thread.

I don't really like Sublime, and I'm embarrassed to namecheck a sacred cow of sandal-wearing prep school faggots, but I'm surprised no one's mentioned them yet. They exhibited a strong hip hop influence through sampling, lyrical references and subject matter. And I think some of it is, you know, decent. "Doin' Time" has a nice beat.

But as a whole, rap-rock is such a horrible disposable style of music.

And RATM should have been an instrumental band.

Yeah that was them. The song is called, quite simply, "KRS-One". It's off one of their earlier albums.

If we're just talking about one song than The Magnificent Seven by the Clash is about as good as it gets. I'm pretty sure it predates any rapping Debbie Harry did too.

How bout Subterranean Homesick Blues by Dylan? He's basically rapping on that song even though there wasn't a name for it back then.

That dylan joint always pops up in threads like these.. great track.. but it can't be hip hop inspired if it pre-dates it..
