His poems have given voice to a nation and helped forge an entirely new genre of music, dub/rhythm poetry. Revolutionary, fiery, scathing, and stinging, Mutabaruka's words are as potent on paper as on CD, and so the literary community needed to create a new term just for his works -- meta-dub.

Dub It! is essentially the dub version of Mutabaruka's groundbreaking debut, Check It!

the musicians included guitarist Smith, Augustus Pablo on keyboards and melodica, the Wailers rhythm section, and ace horn players Dean Fraser, Bobby Ellis and David Madden, among others....

No doubt. Didn't you go to SF State? Anything for a fellow Gater. If I'm tripping, than its anything for a fellow :phila:riend.

Also, if you're feeling this kinda reggae, you should also peep the Mission Sound mixes I posted earlier in this thread. I selected and blended them all personally, and the style of reggae is consistent with that of J Boog. I bet you'd feel 'em, or your friend would.

Since we're on the topic of reggae artists covering the past hits of various gringos, I'll just leave this here

<object width="560" height="345"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/iP8c7LPBFnM?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/iP8c7LPBFnM?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="345" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Part of the Reggae's Gone Country project slated to be released soon. I'll post any interesting developments as they occur.

I've checked out those mixes when they were initially posted. Thoroughly enjoyed. But she will dig them so I'll send them her way as well.
I did in fact go to SFSU for a year in about 2006ish. My recollection of that school is dominated by my hatred for the daily commute back to the east bay but I was a Gater nonethless.

Q: Just to clear up the speculation ג€“ did you sing the ג€œsampleג€ part on Kingston town?

A: Yes. That's me. When I buy my lickle vintage instruments I'm able to recreate sounds y'understand? Dubwise sounds. So that's me - not a sample. I use Protools to record but My piano (organ) is a Whirlitzer from 1965, I use long time instruments especially when it comes to the outboard. I have a Spring Reverb from 1967. Stuff from back in the day.

And another one..
a real gem:

DJ Andy Smith Live at Notting Hill Carnival

Those of you may be familiar with Andyג€™s Document series, but he released Reggae specific mixes with the Trojan and Greensleeves Document as well.

The following recording has Andy Smith selecting early skalike the Skatalites, but also some 50's R & B scorchers such as Larry Dale and Ray Charles that influenced the birth of ska, a real revelation to my ears!!

Highly recommended..

Any of you guys hip to Jahdan Blakkamoore? I saw him open up for Lee Perry last month. Dude is a beast. He's from Guyana, based in NY, appeared on Smif n Wessun's "Soundboy Burial."

A piece of history here:

Don Drummond Requiem 1969

Image

This comes from a cassette recording of a radio show that was originally broadcast by the Radio Jamaica Rediffusion network in 1969, just after the death of Don Drummond.
It is hosted by Dermott Hussey with contributing comments from Prince Buster, Coxsone Dodd, Tommy McCook, and others who knew Don.
Out of respect i would like to thank lordkoos for this.

Enjoy some History:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LU6UNL0R

Don Drummond
(March 12, 1932 -May 6, 1969) was a famous ska trombonist and composer. He was one of the original members of The Skatalites, and composed many of their tunes.

Drummond was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1932.
His musical career began in the mid-1950s with the Eric Deans All-Stars. He continued into the 1960s with others, including Kenny Williams.
With the birth of ska Don joined The Skatalites. He became a household name in Jamaica, before suffering mental problems. He was rated by pianist George Shearing to be amongst the world's top five trombone players.

In 1965 he was convicted of the murder on January 1, 1965 of Anita "Margarita" Mahfood, an exotic dancer and singer. He was interned at Belle Vue Asylum, Kingston where he remained until his death. The official cause of death was "suicide", but other theories remain; some of his colleagues believed it was a government plot against the Kingston musical scene, and some believed that he was killed by gangsters as revenge for the murder of Mahfood.

I haven't checked out the new album yet, will do. When I saw him open for Lee Perry he performed with Subatomic Sound System, so there was a good mix of him rapping over dubstep and dancehall and singing/toasting over roots. I can't get into the uptempo dancehall stuff as much, but he's good at all of it.

Here's that mix I was talking about. It's 30 minutes, not broken up into individual tracks, but the tracklist is below.

Image
01.MORE LIFE [ALL THE ABOVE INSTRUMENTAL]
02.WALKIE WALKIE FREESTYLE [DIGIDESIGN RIDDIM]
03.THE BEST I EVER HAD FT.77 KLASH
04.DEM NUH LIKE IT FT.77 KLASH & SPOEK MATHAMBO
05.TURN THE OTHER WAY [FLO RIDA 'SHONE INSTRUMENTAL']
06.NOBLE SOCIETY - FORGIVENESS
07.NEVER GONNA STOP
08.LIKE THIS [REGGAE GOT SOUL RIDDIM]
09.CASH FLOW FT.MAJOR LAZER [DUTTY ARTZ MOVE IT REFIX]
10.HOW WE GONNA GET THERE
11.DUBPLATE FOR MOONRAKER [SKIT]
12.BAD NEWS [ROCKIN' THAT SHIT RIDDIM]
13.CALI FIELD FT.77 KLASH
14.BLACKBOARD JUNGLE FT.LEE SCRATCH PERRY/
DUBBLESTANDART [SUBATOMIC SOUNDSYSTEM RMX]
15.ABOVE & BEYOND DEM FT.NATE MARS
