I just found this post, and its my instinct to get naked and start roaming around in it, but most of the shit I have to strut involves roots and culture post the 70s and 80s. So before I strip down, I must ask, is it safe?

To start, I will tithe Capelton's 3rd album "Alms House." This was released in 1993 when he was 24.

Say no more my friend, for he who knows the works of Selassi must be familiar with The Prophet.

That particular album is more of a peace of history for those who know his contemporary works, but its still fun. More ragga than reggae if you will, and its a lil rough. "Them A Go Run" is a glimpse of the greatness that developed later into his career.

:icedit: : rapidshare.com/files/25006204/Capleton_-_More_Fire__2000_.rar

This is my favorite album of his. And its worth googlin through to find his live performance in San Francisco circa this release. Its excellence personified.

I'll be back with plenty more. Might as well sticky this bitch.

Roy which album is the King Tubby invasion track from? That's the one that caught my ear the most so far. I'm honestly nowhere near as well versed in his stuff as in Perry's, you gotta help me out here

I got a few more Tubby tracks that haven't been up yet, and then I think we should segway into something else? Horace Andy is always a sure winner, that's just pure soulbutterlove, even if you don't like vocal stuff.

I have it listed as "King Tubby Invasion" on some other comp, but I think the proper title is just "Invasion".

But yeah, "Dub From The Roots" is an incredible album. I listed close to half of the tracks.

it's a Eek A Mouse track on the album U Neek. I don't have it and a cursory search didn't turn up a ready link, but the album does come up easily on amazon and whatnot. I'm sure if you dig a bit more thoroughly you can find a download somewhere.

the song is track 3 on the album and is still called Dyer Maker

here's the amazon link http://www.amazon.com/U-Neek-Eek-Mouse/dp/B000001G0Z

In reverence to the headliner of the festival, I'll up what I consider to be in my top 5 favorite albums of any genre, ever. It's Sizzla Kalonji's debut. I'm not gonna go through a review because words cannot define how good this music makes me feel when I hear it. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Hugh Mundell & Augustus Pablo - Africa Must Be Free by 1983
I would call this essential

Image
http://www.zshare.net/download/1608634474b32551/

1. Let's All Unite 3:34
2. My Mind 3:39
3. Africe Must Be Free By 1983
4. Why Do Black Men Fuss and Fight 5:58
5. Book of Life 3:07
6. Run Revolution a Come 2:34
7. Day of Judgement 3:43
8. Jah Will Provide 3:30
9. Ital Sip 3:36
10. Unity Dub 3:26
11. Africa Dub 2:52
12. My Mind Dub
13. Western Kingston Style 3:38
14. Levi Dub 3:37
15. Revolution Dub
16. Judgement Dub
17. Sufferer Dub 3:09
If Hugh Mundell had lived past, ironically, 1983, there's no telling what his legacy would be today. Africa Must Be Free By 1983 is simply one of the most remarkable debuts in the history of reggae, considering Mundell was only 16 when it was released. Guided by the adept hands of Augustus Pablo, he wrote and co-produced all of the songs on this powerful classic. The potent roots melodies and emotional vocals provided by this prodigy blend beautifully with the robust musical accompaniment from an all-star line-up (Robbie Shakespeare, Jacob Miller, Leroy Sibbles, Augustus Pablo, Earl "Chinna" Smith, Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, Carlton "Santa" Davis, and more). While no one track is spectacular, practically all are solid, as they cohere in a prototypical "album album." Luckily for us listeners, when RAS re-released Africa Must Be Free in 1989, they threw in the equally strong dub version as well. Although Augustus Pablo's rockers sound runs throughout the dubs (Fans will certainly recognize the music in "Book of Life" and its dub from Jacob Miller's "Keep on Knocking."), he doesn't dominate them with his trademark melodica, allowing Mundell to retain his identity. Some of the dubs are better than the vocal versions (the dubs of "Jah Will Provide," "Run Revolution a Come," and "Day of Judgement," for example), while a few of the vocal tracks are preferable ("My Mind" and "Africa Must Be Free By 1983"). If you're like me, the track listing of the dub versions may cause some confusion. Either Mundell named the dubs with the intention to confuse, or the track listing is simply wrong (I vote for the latter.), assuming that "Unity Dub" is supposed to be the title of the dub of "Let's All Unite," "Africa Dub" is supposed to be the dub of "Africa Must Be Free By 1983," "My Mind Dub" is supposed to be the dub of "My Mind," etc. I list below under "Track Listing" how the songs are listed on the album, but track #9 is actually the dub of "Jah Will Provide" (whatever the title is), #10 is the dub of "Book of Life" (ditto), #11 is "Revolution Dub," #12 is "Judgement Dub," #13 is, um, I'm not sure, #14 is "Unity Dub," #15 is "My Mind Dub," #16 is "Africa Dub," and #17 is again a mystery. I don't think that tracks 13 and 17 are dubs of anything on Africa Must Be Free; neither sound like "Why Do Black Men Fuss and Fight," the only track without a dub here. To confuse matters, there is an extra dub (9 dubs, 8 vocal tracks). Anyway, in the end, all that really matters is that it's all good, whatever the order. Great music, great lyrics, great message, JAH RASTAFARI!!!!!

Roy Samuel Reid (28 June 1944 ג€” 27 November 1999, born in St. Thomas, Jamaica) better known as I-Roy was a Jamaican DJ who had a very prolific career during the 1970s.
Deriving his name, and to some extent his style, from U-Roy, Reid was also heavily influenced in his early career by Dennis Alcapone. With early recordings for Gussie Clarke, Glen Brown, Lee Perry and Bunny Lee, Reid established himself at the forefront of 1970s reggae DJ's. His debut album Presenting I Roy is considered a classic of its genre, and was followed up by a series of strong albums including Hell and Sorrow. Linton Kwesi Johnson dubs I-Roy "the mighty poet" in "Street 66" on the album, Bass Culture.

The mighty poet I-Roy was on the wire
Western did a skank; and each man laugh
an feelin Irie; dread I;
Street 66, the said man said
any policeman come ere
will get some righteous ras klaat licks
yeah man - whole heap kicks.

For several years from 1975, I-Roy engaged in an on-record slanging match with fellow DJ Prince Jazzbo, the two trading insults on successive singles, although in reality they were good friends. In 1976, I-Roy signed to Virgin Records with whom he would go on to release five albums. On occasion he would utilise The Revolutionaries as his backing band.

Reggae's move to the dancehall era in the 1980s saw I-Roy's popularity decline and although he continued to record, his output was not of the standard that he had set in the previous decade.

He died in 1999 of heart failure, at the age of fifty-five.He was homeless when he died.

More a comment on the fact that there wasn't a lot of other participating, I didn't see the need in uploading stuff for strictly for ya'll who clearly aren't hurting for good reggae.

My knowledge of reggae music is pretty much limited to artist's names and album titles. My collection isn't too shabby but there is no way that I could really participate in a discussion.

*request*

Its a Scratch Perry or King Tubby (or both together) song that goes,-

"Say hey Now!" "inaudible inaudible yadda yadda one thousand times"

the words say hey ya, one thousand times, and one million times are the only words I could understand thanks for the help.

the song is not so dubby but more, uh, regular reggae sounding. thanks

This is literally my favorite single ever, Horace Andy - Ain't no sunshine/Noisy place 10"

Horace Andy is probably my favorite reggae singer, I wouldn't even put him down as strictly reggae since the dude is clearly a soul singer that just happened to be from jamaica. If you can't get into his stuff, I don't know what to tell you

1 - aint no sunshine.mp3 - 5.12MB - obv a cover of the Bill Withers (?) original

2 - dont try to use me.mp3 - 6.33MB I think this is a cover as well but I can't recall who sang the original

3 - a quiet place.mp3 - 4.96MB A very famous song goes by all sorts of names, A Man Next Door is I think the most popular. It's been covered tons of times, written by John Holt. Discogs curiously gives credit to both Holt and Andy on the vocals.

4 - a noisey place.mp3 - 5.61MB A dub version of Quiet place, credited to King Tubby

johnny osbourne - ice cream love.mp3 - 3.10MB John Osbourne is another great soul singer, and this is a rediculously catchy song that uses the worst metaphor for tepid sexual relations ever. For a love song the drums are surprsingly heavy and ominous

lee the new establishement - dancing ver..mp3 - 2.72MB Don't know shit about these people, but it's a pretty sweet rocksteady number

lone ranger - natty chalwa.mp3 - 3.95MB

lone ranger - natty chalwa pt.2 w the brentford rockers.mp3 - 4.14MB - instrumental version

Lone Ranger was a toaster/dj. In keeping with his cowboy themed name, the song prominently features a few licks from The Good The Bad And The Ugly theme. The Morricone nod isn't as exotic as it sounds, spaghetti westerns and kung fu movies were extremely popular in jamaica during the 70s and their influence on reggae music is quite noticeable. For example....the final showdown of the classic The Harder They Come cross cuts with scenes of people watching Django in the movie theatre, thereby cementing Jimmy Cliff's outlaw-hero status. Lee Perry produced albums influenced by both movie generes, namely Django Rides Again and Kung Fu Meets The Dragon. This particular chord progression has been used frequently, and still pops up in new dancehall songs
