Phife's Best Verses?

Post by Thun »

Alotta people shit on Phife for being a sideman, and at times a subpar flunky. However there are certain instances where he definitely ripped shit, and dare I say, stole the show.

For example:

"Can I Kick It"

"Buggin' Out"

"Check The Rhime"

"Scenario" (both versions)

"Let The Horns Blow" w/Chi-Ali

"La Schmoove" w/ Fu Shnickens

"Award Tour" (didn't outshine Tip but ripped it nonetheless)

"We Can Get Down" (again, didn't outshine Tip but he murders this ... seems to be the case on many of the Marauders cuts...)

Add on...

Even basic sh!t like Keep It Rollin' or Chase pt. 2, especially Chase pt.2, I reallyt liked Phifa as much if not more than tip.

All of Midnight Marauders. He shits on every track he's on.

"I flipped ya crazier than a bus load full of jerry's kids"

I love how none of his solo album songs will appear on this list.

Glad to see this thread. When Phife came into his own on Low End Theory, ATCQ became a much doper group to me. Tip was always the tighter emcee but in many cases I found Phife more entertaining.

Buggin Out

"and If I ever went solo, my favourite MC would be me"

now THATS a dope line!

But my favourite verse ever is, without a doubt, Buggin Out.

This.

Phife definitely got better with each album leading up to MM. After that...not so much.

He may not have always ripped tracks but he was always an excellent supporting member of a fucking great rap group.

Everything that has been mentioned here, I agree with, I have always liked Phife, but was slightly disappointed with his solo album Ventilation: Da LP

Corrected, but agreed, the way he delivers that is impeccable.

eh..he was ok on it. to me, there was always a ceiling to how dope he could be. was it dope for a phife verse? sure. was it dope when compared to other really good rappers? not at all.
his improvement from the first to second tribe album was huge but, to me , he went from being awful to listenable. some dope lines here an there but , overall, pretty whatever in every sense.
i think his verse on "Vibe and stuff" is one of his best.

I don't know man ... I mean purely from a crowd-rocking, traditional sense, I think he really killed shit on La Schmoove. Obviously he's not Kool G. Rap but if that was a cipher in 1992 how could you not think he stepped in an got busy? To each his own I guess.

I'm probably one of the few who hasn't listened to his solo. Is it really THAT bad? I'll listen one day, but is it production? Lyrics? Both?
