Sites to enhance your downloading experience

Post by Verge »

I've mentioned both of these sites in previous threads, but figured maybe someone knows some other sites that make downloading easier.

www.skipscreen.com = I've been using this for at least a month and it's been pretty great. It skips waiting times on sites like zshare and megaupload.
It still might have some little problems here and there but you can send them suggestions and they actually listen. You can choose which sites you want to skip because sometimes you might not want to skip the previews.

www.farkie.com = This is a site I've been using for a couple of weeks to download youtube audio. All you do is copy the youtube page's address onto the farkie page and it converts the video into an mp3. Pretty cool. They had some problems and were down for a couple of days, but I think they're back up and running now.

If anyone has any other suggestions, add on...

Cheers for skipscreen. Firefox is the shit. Makes me think we're due for another Firefox add-ons thread in funky techs.

I downloaded something called 'youtube to mp3 converter' which works pretty well and is worth googling.
If i can find a link to the site I used I'll post it.

http://www.downloadhelper.net/ goes right up on the browser and is otherwise just like the second link you posted, but it can extract audio from anything you access on the internet that makes noise.

Downloadhelper fell the f*** off a few months ago when it stopped recognizing music files on myspace. I use file2hd.com now.

http://www.keepvid.com is another one to convert any online video to an mp4. No downloading of the original file or a program needed, either - just enter the page link on keepvid's main page and it does the converting for you.

Myspace just changed things so now file2hd won't work either.

Damn.

But they can't stop me from just recording something with audacity.

Why have they got to put hurdles to keep us from downloading files that are already on our own damned computers?

I've been playing around with Farkie and Fetchmp3 and Video2mp3.net. I tried two of the same Youtube videos on all three. Here's what I found:

Farkie http://www.farkie.com/
- All mp3s came out at 64 kbps in mono. Quality not great.
- You get 3 downloads before it requires that you log in (create an account).
- Interface fairly quick and easy.
- Firefox add-on available which I did not try.

Fetchmp3 http://www.fetchmp3.com/
- All mp3s came out at 128 kbps in mono.
- You need to log in (create an account) to get the higher bit rate (otherwise its 64 kpbs).
- Interface kind of cool (drag and drop) but more steps involved than the others.
- Firefox add-on worked but was a little buggy (its beta, perhaps not stable for the Mac)

Video2mp3.net (youtube to mp3 converter) http://www.video2mp3.net/index.php
- One mp3 came out with one at 64kbps and one at 128 kbps (I'm not sure why, probably clicke the wrong button). But the quality even on the 64 kbps one was pretty decent, much better than Farkie.
- No log-in or account creation needed.
- Quickest and easiest interface, least amount of steps.
- Firefox add-on is really nice. It adds a link right onto the middle of the Youtube page(!), giving you the option of normal or high quality. The high quality version was 128 kbps and in stereo. Much cleaner, louder, and far better than the other two services.

I tried a couple others as well but they were pretty lame from the very start so I dumped 'em. I may be missing something or not using stuff right, but for now I'm definitely gonna go with the Video2mp3.net firefox add-on.

Word, thanks for adding on, fellas.
I'll have to try some of the other ones.
Definitely bump this thread whenever you find something that might be more advanced or better.

Skipscreen doesn't really work for me anymore, except on zShare. Anyone having the same experience? Did megaupload and others figure out a way to block it or something?

Mine still works on DepositFiles, last time I checked.
But it didn't work on zshare anymore, just went in infinite loop.
And zshare was the main reason I was using this, so it's pretty null to me now.
I have accounts with rapidshare, mediafire, megaupload, and divshare so I
don't know if they work for them anymore.

I guess it was cool while it lasted.

Here is a Rapidshare and Megaupload link checker. You don't even have to click the link as a tick or a cross comes up next to the link to tell you whether its active.

Add this:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748

Restart then install this:

JDownloader is a download helper that can mass download direct links as well as megaupload/rapidshare/etc. links. It works with Flashgot too.
